PRINCETON, N.J. – For just the second time since Ivy League play started in 1956-57, the ninth-ranked Dartmouth men's squash team defeated No. 11 Princeton, 5-4 at the Jadwin Squash Courts on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, the Big Green improve to 3-3, while the Tigers drop to 2-4.
The historic Dartmouth victory comes off the heels of last season's match with Princeton in Hanover, when the Big Green recorded their first win since Ancient Eight play began. In the first round of the contest, sophomore Carson Spahr lost his first two games before winning the third and falling in the fourth. Junior Jack Harvey was able to establish a quick 2-0 lead over his opponent, but eventually fell in a deciding fifth game. Sophomore Matt Giegerich was down 2-1, but the match went to a fifth game where he secured the 3-2 win.
In the second round, junior Alvin Heumann lost his first two games, but played exceptionally well to win the next three games and take the match in five. Junior Brian Giegerich won 3-1 in a close affair that saw the score tied a one apiece in the early stages. Sophomore Sam Epley played hard, but lost his match in four games.
In the third round of matches, freshman Drew Monroe split the first two games with his opponent, but pulled ahead and won 3-1. Freshman Brandon De Otaduy established dominance over his opponent early on in the match, going up 2-0, before losing 3-2 in a lengthy five-game match.
With the score tied 4-4, senior Glen Brickman was down 2-0 in the deciding match. However, he came back to win the last three games: 11-8, 14-12, 11-8, giving Dartmouth the overall victory in a thrilling finish.
The Big Green return to the court tomorrow when Dartmouth travels to Penn at 11 a.m.
