NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Facing each other for the first time this season, the Dartmouth women's hockey team fell to Yale, 3-0, at Ingalls Rink on Friday evening. The Big Green are now 5-14-0 overall and 3-10-0 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Bulldogs improved to 6-11-3 and 4-8-1.
Sophomore Tess Bracken led the charge with her five shots on goal, while freshman Cecilia Lopez had three. In net, senior Robyn Chemago made 29 saves and had a .935 save percentage.
“We've got to find a way to put the puck in the net,” head coach Laura Schuler said. “Yale played us hard and exposed some deficiencies in our ability to defend the rush and in our dzone play. Tomorrow is a new day. We'll do some video and address those areas that we need to improve upon.”
Halfway through the first period, junior Morgan Turner had a quick break, but her shot was saved by Kyra O'Brien. The Big Green player picked up her own rebound and tried to send it into the right corner, but the Yale goalie was there to get that one too. It looked as if neither team would get on the board in the first until Mallory Souliotis broke the scoreless tie with her shot from the left point that flew over Chemago's extended glove with 11.9 seconds remaining on the clock.
The second period was quieter, even though both teams had a number of good chances. Dartmouth outshot Yale, 10-9, to bring the two-period total to 21-19 in the Bulldogs' favor.
Senior Emma Korbs gave the Big Green their best chance at a goal in the third when her shot that was saved by Yale's netminder bounced out of her glove, but the Bulldog defense managed to clear the puck. At 7:48 of the third, the home team made it a 2-0 game, with the tally being credited to Julia Yetman. A late Yale penalty gave Dartmouth a few more opportunities, but O'Brien saved them all. An empty netter at 19:19 by Jordan Chancellor ended the game.
The Big Green will head to Providence to face Brown at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
