PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Dartmouth women's hockey fell to Brown, 1-0, at Meehan Auditorium on Saturday afternoon. The Big Green are now 5-15-0 overall and 3-11-0 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Bears improved to 5-16-0 and 3-11-0.
“I thought our team played well defensively, but we need to find a way to bury pucks,” head coach Laura Schuler said. “We can't win games without scoring goals, so our goal going forward is to work on creating offense.”
Brown took control of the first period, outshooting Dartmouth, 14-3, and testing senior netminder Robyn Chemago on multiple occasions. At 14:43, less than 20 seconds after the Big Green's second penalty was completed, the Bears' Sarah Migliori collected her own rebound and found the back of the net, scoring the game winner and giving the home team a one-goal lead.
Dartmouth returned in the second period a more aggressive team, taking more quality shots. Freshman Cecilia Lopez had her shot saved by Monica Elvin, but the Brown goalie dropped the puck in the crease. The Big Green rookie tried her luck at finding the back of the net, but Elvin beat her to it. During a particularly busy three-minute span at the end that saw four Brown shots, two by Sam Donovan proved dangerous: one hit the post and another was reviewed to see if it passed the goal line, but it was ruled no good and the score remained 1-0.
Halfway through the third, sophomore Alyssa Baker shot from a tough angle, but the puck would have gone in had Elvin not been there to grab it out of the air. With 15 seconds remaining on the power play and less than four minutes to go in the third, fellow sophomore Kate Landers hit the pipe, giving Dartmouth its best opportunity of the period.
The Bears outshot the Big Green, 31-19. Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play. Chemago had 30 saves. Landers and seniors Mackenzie St. Onge and Kennedy Ottenbreit led the team with three shots apiece.
The Big Green will host four consecutive games. Next weekend, Cornell and Colgate will come to town, while Clarkson and St. Lawrence will arrive in Hanover the following weekend.
