HANOVER, N.H. - Returning home after playing three games on the road, the Dartmouth women's hockey team fell to No. 8/8 Cornell, 1-0, at Thompson Arena on Friday evening. The Big Green are now 5-16-0 overall and 3-12-0 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Big Red improved to 14-6-2 and 10-3-2.
Senior Robyn Chemago played a good game between the pipes, making a number of huge saves to keep Dartmouth in the game, stopping 28 in all. Sophomore Tess Bracken led the team with three shots.
“We played against a really tough team tonight that is currently ranked eighth in the country,” head coach Laura Schuler said, “and I thought we did a really good job of limiting their chances, especially in the second and third periods.”
Cornell's lone goal was an unassisted tally scored by Kaitlin Doering at 9:31 in the first period, skating past the Dartmouth defenders to find the right corner of the net. The Big Green had a number of opportunities – junior Morgan Turner hit the pipe late in the period – but netminder Marlene Boissonnault managed to turn away all of Dartmouth's attempts.
The third period was the Big Green's strongest, as they took more shots and got closer to cracking Boissonnault. With less than a minute to play in the period, plus an empty net and the extra skater, Dartmouth unleashed a flurry of shots, forcing Boissonnault to move quickly, but ultimately being unable to sneak the puck past her.
“Our team got better and better with each period we played and we just need to continue to work on creating offense,” Schuler continued. “We had a lot of good looks at end of the game on the 6-on-5. Now we just need to focus on burying pucks when we get our chances.”
Cornell outshot Dartmouth, 29-13. In a game that saw just two penalties, both teams went 0-for-1 on the power play.
Dartmouth will return to action on Saturday when it faces Colgate at 3 p.m.
