Shaunessy Nets One in Loss to Harvard in Season Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior alternate captain Caroline Shaunessy netted the Big Green's goal in Dartmouth women's hockey's 4-1 loss to ECAC Hockey rival Harvard in both team's season opener at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center on Friday evening.

At 11:24 of the third period, Shaunessy bested netminder Beth Larcom, finding the back of the net with just five seconds remaining on the 5-on-3. Sophomore Christina Rombaut won the faceoff and passed to Shaunessy at the point, whose wrister ended up in the top corner.

This was Shaunessy's second goal of her career and Romabut's third helper in her two years in Hanover.

Junior Christine Honor played the entirety of the game, ending up with a career-high 39 saves.

"First and forement," interim head coach Joe Marsh said, "I think our effort was outstanding tonight. Obviously, we have to find ways to sustain and play offensively, and work a little harder with better puck support and not turn the puck over so much. But, overall, our effort was there for 60 full minutes and we made a ton of progress in a week. Our biggest focus this season is going to be on our compete level. And, I thought that was our strongest point tonight.

"We will look at the tape and I think that the kids are smart nough to know we have some things to work on," Marsh continued. "But, if we continue an effort like that every night, I think it will start to bear some fruit over the course of the season."

Early in the first period, it looked as if Harvard had broken the scoreless tie, but the goal was waved off and the score remained 0-0 until Lexie Laing got the Crimson on the board with four minutes to play. Honor moved quickly to make the save with her left pad, but the rebound made its way back to Laing, who knocked the puck between Honor's legs for the first tally of the night.

Following another Crimson goal in the second to make it a 2-0 game, Shaunessy cut the Crimson's lead to one, but Harvard responded with a pair of markers exactly a minute apart (4-1). The Big Green got a few more shots before the end of the game, including one by freshman Jennifer Costa that had to be saved.

Harvard outshot Dartmouth, 43-24. The Big Green went 1-for-7 on the power play, while the Crimson went 2-for-6.

On Sunday, Dartmouth will head to Durham to take on New Hampshire in a non-conference tilt scheduled for 2 p.m.
