NEW YORK, N.Y. – The last time these two team's squared off it took a historic four overtimes to decide a winner. That was not the case this evening, as the Dartmouth women's basketball team fell to Columbia, 69-48, in Levien Gymnasium on Saturday night.
With the loss, the Big Green drop to 6-17 overall, 1-8 in Ivy League play, while the Lions improve to 13-10 overall, 3-7 in conference play.
Senior Fanni Szabo had another decent performance on Dartmouth's New York swing with 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore Isalys Quinones also scored 12 in the 27 minutes of action she saw off the bench. For Columbia, Camille Zimmerman led her team with 20 points and 10 rebounds for the double double.
“We didn't execute offensively today,” said Belle Koclanes, the Gail Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Women's Basketball. “We had some good looks, but we didn't put it in. We missed layups and free throws in the beginning of the game. We need to take care of us and rebound the basketball better. Our skills will get better and we'll keep working on it, but I have to give Fanni Szabo credit though, she's playing like a senior should.”
The Big Green battled and hung with a talented Lions' squad for the majority of the contest, trailing just 22-13 after one. In the second, Dartmouth's Andi Norman hit a three and layup just before the 5:08 mark to bring the Big Green within four.
After Annie McKenna's layup through traffic, Emily Slagle tied the contest at 26 toward the end of the quarter. However, Columbia responded with six unanswered points including a layup at the buzzer, taking a 50-41 lead into the locker room at the half.
Dartmouth came out strong in the second half with a short 6-2 run to being the third. A jumper by Quiñones brought the Big Green within a point of the Lions' lead, but that would be as close as Dartmouth would get for the remainder of the night.
Columbia went on a 16-0 run that spanned over six minutes that bled into the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach for good. Szabo's jumper at the 4:20 mark ended the scoring drought for Dartmouth, but by then it was too late to surmount a late-game comeback.
“The message to this group right now is this is the beginning,” Koclanes said. “Every face in that locker room will be back next year with the exception of Fanni. You need to remember what this feels like and take it with you. Take these lessons and let's show up to practice now, don't wait until next season. We need to take the lessons we're leaning now and take them into practice on Monday.”
The Big Green return to action next week when Dartmouth travels to Brown before heading to Yale in the final road weekend of the regular season. Both games can be seen live in HD on the Ivy League Digital Network for subscribers.
