AUBURNDALE, Fla. — Sophomore Matt Feinstein had three hits and junior Kyle Holbrook drove in three runs as Dartmouth (8-5) defeated Southern Maine (4-3) at Lake Myrtle Park on Thursday afternoon, 9-1. The six Big Green pitchers combined to hold the Huskies to one unearned run on six hits as the offense quickly took care of business, scoring four times in the top of the first.
Feinstein finished the game 3-for-5 with a double, a run and two RBIs for his team-leading eighth multi-hit game out of 13 this season. Holbrook added a pair of singles that produced three RBIs in five trips to the plate, while sophomores Mike Brown and Nate Ostmo also chipped in two hits with a single and a double apiece.
Southern Maine starter Riley Boivin (0-1) did not survive the first inning in his first appearance on the mound this season. Feinstein smacked a one-out double, took third on a single by junior Dustin Shirley and remained there when senior Michael Ketchmark walked to load the bases. Holbrook followed with a two-run single, and after Brown drove in another run with a double, junior Hayden Rappoport collected an RBI of his own with a sacrifice fly to end Boivin's day with Dartmouth leading, 4-0.
In the second, freshman Trevor Johnson stroked an RBI double to score sophomore Steffen Torgersen, who had walked to lead off the inning.
The lone Huskies run of the game came in the third against junior starter Sam Fichthorn. With two down, Dylan Hapworth singled, then scooted to second when Fichthorn threw an errant pickoff attempt. Kip Richard took advantage of the RBI opportunity by sending a 2-0 pitch back through the box to score Hapworth.
The Big Green added two more runs to their ledger in the fourth. Ostmo led off with a double, Torgersen walked again and Johnson bunted the runners to second and third. Feinstein then poked a ball through the right side to send both runners across the plate for a 7-1 lead.
Holbrook singled home Johnson in the sixth, and Johnson drove in Rappoport in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Fichthorn (1-0) was credited with the victory in a scheduled three-inning start, yielding the one unearned run on five hits and a walk with one strikeout. The five relievers of senior Jackson Bubala, junior Marc Bachman, freshman Austen Michel, junior Patrick Peterson and freshman Tyler Fagler combined to surrender just one hit, one walk and one hit batter over six stanzas. Bubala fanned three in two innings, Michel got two of his three outs on strikes, and Fagler pitched a scoreless ninth in his collegiate debut with one punchout.
Dartmouth faces a tough test over the weekend to finish its spring break trip with 26-ranked UCF (18-4) hosting the Big Green for a three-game series. Friday night's game will begin at 6:30 p.m. with junior Jack Fossand (0-1, 4.05) slated to start on the mound for the visitors against the Knights' Robby Howell (4-0, 2.01).
Notes: While Ketchmark's eight-game hitting streak came to an end, he did walk twice to extend his streak of reaching base to all 13 games along with Johnson … Dartmouth head coach Bob Whalen and Southern Maine head coach Ed Flaherty were teammates at Maine in the mid-'70s, and Flaherty's nephew, Matt MacDowell, was a member of the Big Green baseball team from 2012-15.
