ORLANDO, Fla. — While Dartmouth won the first two games of the series, 26th-ranked UCF was able to salvage the third and final game on Sunday at Jay Bergman Field by a final of 15-0. Joseph Sheridan threw six shutout innings while the offense exploded for the Knights (19-6), which had managed just four runs in the first two games, thanks to a dozen hits and eight walks.
The Big Green (10-6) got two of their six hits from freshman Blake Crossing but saw their modest three-game win streak come to an end while getting shut out for the first time since last April 17.
Shortstop Kam Gellinger was the top hitter for UCF, reaching base four times on two doubles and two hit by pitches while scoring three runs and driving in two. Matthew Mika added a single, double, two runs and two RBIs plus stole two bases, while Kyle Marsh and Josh Moser also produced a pair of hits.
Sheridan (4-2) allowed just five singles — one in each of the first five frames — and struck out five as no Dartmouth runner advanced past first base with him on the mound. The Big Green's best scoring opportunity came in the seventh against Knight reliever Austin Griffin, making his season debut on the mound. Freshman Michael Calamari drew a lead-off walk and classmate Henry Eilen stroked his first collegiate hit with a single to left. But they went no further as Griffin retired the next three hitters in order.
UCF took the lead quickly in the first as the Dartmouth defense committed two errors that led to three unearned runs. Senior starter Jackson Bubala allowed just a walk in the second and retired the side in order in the third, then ran into trouble in the fourth and walked in a run before being relieved by freshman Tyler Fagler. Mika provided the big hit with a two-run double as the Knights finished the frame with a 8-0 lead.
In the fifth, UCF added two more runs on a squeeze bunt and a sacrifice fly, then tacked on two more in the seventh and three in the eighth to complete the scoring. Freshman Eric Stolt came on to pitch during the eighth and threw one pitch, inducing a double play to end the inning.
Bubala (0-2) was stuck with the loss for yielding seven runs, four earned, on three hits and four walks over 3.1 innings with two strikeouts.
Dartmouth returns to New England this week but will continue to play on the road, starting with a non-conference game at Quinnipiac (7-13) on Wednesday, March 29 at 3 p.m.
Notes: Only five other Dartmouth teams in the last 50 seasons have posted a better winning percentage (.625) by the end of spring break — 1975 (6-3, .667), 1986 (6-3, .667), 1998 (10-1, .909), 2011 (9-4, .692) and 2013 (11-1, .917).
