HANOVER, N.H. – Alexa Schneck scored 4:09 into double overtime to give Penn a 3-2 victory against the Dartmouth field hockey team Saturday at Chase Field.
Â
The Big Green drop to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in Ivy League play this season, while the Quakers are 6-5 overall and 2-1 in league contests thanks to the result.
Â
It was a scoreless game until the final minute of the opening half when Erin Quinn one-timed home her first goal of the season on a Schneck centering feed.
Â
It remained 1-0 until the 54th minute when senior
Gemma Bautista laid out to redirect a
Jessica Valvano shot off a corner into the top of the net for the equalizer.
Â
A penalty stroke goal from Schneck in the 60th minute once again put the visitors on top.
Â
However, the home team answered back with just over four minutes left in regulation as junior
Katie Persin slammed home her third of the year and the first in nearly a month to tie things up. Persin was able to find space to collect the rebound from a
Katie Spanos shot and put it over the Penn keeper to force overtime.
Â
For the second time this season, though, Dartmouth was unable to protect its home turf in the extra frame as Schneck fired home the winner on a corner play with just under six minutes to play. The Big Green were dealt a challenging blow prior to the play as Persin was whistled for a green card, putting the home team down a player.
Â
Penn's Ava Rosati stopped seven shots in the winning effort, while senior goalkeeper
Hailey Valerio took the loss, making five saves. Valvano was also credited with a defensive save, helping her goalkeeper out in the game's waning moments.
Â
Dartmouth has a busy week ahead as it heads to Maine for a non-conference game Tuesday before returning to Hanover and Chase Field to play host to Yale (12 p.m.) on Saturday and Northeastern on Sunday (1 p.m.).
