HANOVER, N.H. – Goals by junior
Rose Falzone and freshman
Chloe Puddifant helped the Dartmouth women's hockey team tie RIT, 2-2, at Thompson Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Big Green are now 2-5-1, while the Tigers have a record of 2-6-4.
Also ending the day with a point were senior
Tess Bracken, sophomore
Megan Cornell and freshman
Sara McClanahan with their assists. Senior
Christine Honor had 25 saves.
"I thought our team took a step forward this afternoon," head coach
Laura Schuler said. "We did things with purpose and detail and I'm proud of our efforts. We generated a lot of chances and it's going to come."
The start of the first period was quiet, with neither team getting many quality chances. Midway through, McClanahan fired point blank at goalie Terra Lanteigne, picking up her own rebound and shooting again, but the Lanteigne got that one too. Dartmouth continued to lead in shots and had some nice attempts, but it was RIT that got on the board first, scoring just five seconds after the Green killed off the first penalty of the day.
In the second, the Tigers held on to their one-goal lead while the Big Green continued to outshoot their opponent. Dartmouth kept trying to solve RIT's goalie, finally succeeding at 9:05. Bracken carried the puck up the ice and took a chance, getting stopped by Lanteigne. The rebounded puck was sent home by Falzone, who shot to the right while the goalie was still covering her left to tie things up.
RIT got another on the board just 21 seconds into the third period, but Dartmouth responded a little later when Puddifant scored her first collegiate goal, picking up the puck in a scuffle and burying it in the top left corner. The Big Green continued to pepper the netminder with shots (outshooting the visitors, 49-22, by the end of the third), but Lanteigne was on her game. With the left side of the net unguarded, freshman
Lotti Odnoga tried her hand with less than a second to go, but was blocked.
The Tigers had a 5-1 shot advantage in the extra period, but were not able to capitalize and the game ended in a tie, a first this season for the Big Green.
Dartmouth will be back on Nov. 24-25 when it heads to Orono for a pair of non-conference games against Maine.
