HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team continued its dominance over in-state rival New Hampshire with a 13-3 win Wednesday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field.
The 2018 home opener for the Big Green (1-1), they controlled play and dictated tempo early, methodically building their lead to 10-0 at halftime en route to their 22nd win in the last 23 matchups against their Granite State counterparts.
Six combined tallies were scored in the second half as Dartmouth held on for a 10-goal win against UNH (1-2) for the second straight year after an 18-8 victory in Durham last year.
“I was very pleased with the result, especially with the way the defense played,” head coach Danielle Spencer said. “The way that unit rebounded from the last game to this one was great. I am so proud of how they responded.”
If the defensive effort of the Green and White — who limited the Wildcats to just six shot attempts in each half — was the headline, the next story was the career day of sophomore Katie Bourque and her six points.
Bourque scored three times and dished out a trio of assists. One short of her career high for goals in a game, the three helpers was by far her best performance after eight one-assist games in 2017.
After just four goals all season as a rookie last spring, Ellie Carson exploded for three goals and one assist against UNH on Wednesday. Larson Bennett and Campbell Brewer also finished the game with a pair of goals apiece, with Kierra Sweeney, Elizabeth Mastrio and Michelle Yu all scoring once.
For Yu, the goal in the final two minutes was her first collegiate score.
Spencer credited the defense with their strong play leading to the win, and anchoring that unit was sophomore goalkeeper Kiera Vrindten. Though the second-year keeper finished with just four saves on the afternoon, three quality chances came in the first half with the game still within reach of the visitors.
Vrindten gave way to freshman goalie Katie Forman for her first appearance with 9:20 on the clock.
UNH got a pair of goals from Krissy Schafer and one from Rebecca Sennott in the second, managing to cut the deficit down to single digits late, only to have Yu's score make it a 10-goal game again.
Dartmouth dominated on the scoreboard because it managed to dominate the circle, holding a 13-3 edge in draw controls. Junior Kathryn Giroux led all players with five in game.
The Big Green are back in action next Wednesday at UAlbany. Opening draw control is set for 2 p.m. in the New York Capital Region.
