ALBANY, N.Y. – The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team picked up its first road win of the 2018 season Wednesday afternoon at UAlbany with a 12-8 victory.
Sophomore Ellie Carson led the way offensively with six goals to help the Big Green (2-1) to their first win against the Great Danes (0-4) since 2005 and snap a five-game skid against Albany dating back to 2011.
Dartmouth looked as if it would run away and hide in the first half, building a 9-2 lead by the break thanks to seven straight goals over the final 19 minutes to close out the half.
Carson scored four of her six goals in the opening frame with Larson Bennett adding a pair of her own. Katie O'Neill, Kathryn Giroux and Michelle Yu all added one each as the Green and White took a comfortable seven-goal lead into the intermission.
The home team came out ready to play in the second half, though, scoring four of the first five goals with two Great Danes' goals sandwiching an Elizabeth Mastrio score.
UAlbany's Kendra Harbinger scored three times in the second half, all from the free-position shot. A Kaylee Rickert goal with 5:19 remaining made the score 11-8, but three goals would be as close as the Great Danes would get as Carson's second tally of the final frame came a minute later and capped the afternoon's scoring.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kiera Vrindten did her part in the circle, finishing the game with seven saves to pick up the win. At the other end, Albany's Erin Leghart was tested often and needed to make 15 saves, while allowing 12 as the Dartmouth attack was relentless in firing 27 shots on goal and attempting 39 in all. Carson was credited with 10 of those attempts.
The Big Green were also solid in the midfield, picking up 24 ground balls, 10 more than the Great Danes. Katie Bourque registered a team-high four draw controls with O'Neill securing three.
Dartmouth is home at Scully-Fahey field on Saturday against Columbia in the Ivy League opener for both teams. Opening draw control is set for noon.
