SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Tied at four in the sixth with the visiting Dartmouth Big Green, UC Santa Barbara exploded for seven runs to blow open the game en route to a 15-5 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. Tommy Jew provided the big blow in the inning with a grand slam, the first of three consecutive home runs for the Gauchos (5-9-1), while Dartmouth (2-5) suffered the loss in its first of 10 games on the West Coast.
Jew finished the game 3-for-4, coming up a double shy of the cycle, with three runs and four RBIs to lead the 17-hitt UCSB attack. Jason Willow also had three hits and scored three times, and Marcos Castanon, Sam Cohen and Armani Smith each homered to help the Gauchos post a season high 15 runs.
The Big Green were no slouches at the plate, banging out 13 hits, led by junior Sean Sullivan who was 3-for-5. Four others had a pair of knocks — junior Matt Feinstein, seniors Kyle Holbrook and Dustin Shirley, and freshman Oliver Campbell — while sophomore Michael Calamari drove in two runs.
Dartmouth struck first, loading the bases with one out in the second on three singles before senior Justin Fowler lofted a sacrifice fly. But UC Santa Barbara answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half on Castanon's long solo homer, his first of the season, and an RBI triple off the bat of Michael McAdoo, the first of three Gaucho three-baggers on the afternoon.
In the third, the Big Green matched those two runs to reclaim the lead at 3-2. Feinstein and Sullivan led off with singles before a force out put runners on the corners. Shirley yanked a ball just inside the third-base bag for a run-scoring double, sending UCSB starter Liam Steigerwald to the showers, and Calamari got the go-ahead run home on a chopper to first.
A Feinstein two-out, RBI single in the fourth, scoring Campbell who had doubled, boosted the lead to 4-2, but triples in the fourth and fifth innings led to solitary runs for the Gauchos, knotting the score at four.
UC Santa Barbara put the first four batters on base in the sixth, all on singles, bringing home a run and leaving the bases loaded for Jew, who belted a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left for his grand slam, his first four-bagger of the year. Cohen followed with his first round-tripper, then Smith cracked his second to cap the inning for an 11-4 advantage.
The Big Green tried to chip away at their deficit in the seventh, loading the bases with one down. Calamari greeted reliever Shea Barry with an infield hit to drive in a run, but Barry proceeded to get a big strikeout and a grounder to short to end the threat.
The Gauchos then tacked on four more runs in their half on just one hit as Dartmouth pitchers walked the bases loaded and forced in a run with another free pass. The lone hit in the inning came in the form of a Smith two-run double, and Eric Yang brought home the final run with a sacrifice fly.
Kevin Chandler (1-0) picked up the win for UCSB with 2.1 innings of relief, yielding a run on two hits with a pair of punchouts.
Sophomore Michael Parsons (0-1) took the loss after two rough innings out of the bullpen during which he was touched for eight runs. Classmate Austen Michel made his first start of the season and second of his career, hurling four frames while surrendering three runs on eight hits.
Dartmouth's spring break trip continues on Thursday night with the first of four games at Cal State Bakersfield (6-11). Junior right-hander Cole O'Connor (1-1, 2.25) is scheduled to start on the mound for the Big Green with first pitch at 6 p.m. (PDT).
Notes: Sullivan boosted his average to .448 on the young season with five multi-hit games … Dartmouth has allowed at least 10 runs in each of its five losses … the Big Green are 0-6 all-time against UC Santa Barbara in a series that began in 2001.
