Hotel California
The start of the spring-break trip to California didn't go as well as hoped, dropping four of the first five games, but Dartmouth is aiming to right its ship with five more contests this week. Single games at San Jose State and Westmont will be followed with a three-game series at Cal Poly to conclude the stay on the West Coast.
Last Week in Review
• Dartmouth battled UC Santa Barbara to a draw through five innings before the Gauchos exploded for seven runs in the sixth, defeating the Big Green, 15-5.
• Junior Cole O'Connor went the distance in a 4-1 loss at Cal State Bakersfield to start a four-game series, the first nine-inning complete game for a Big Green pitcher in nearly two years (granted, he only threw eight since it was a road game).
• An 11-run outburst in game two evened the series as senior Dustin Shirley belted his first home run of the year to back the five-inning start by senior Jack Fossand, who allowed just two runs.
• But in each of the last two games against the Roadrunners, Dartmouth fell behind by a 5-0 score en route to dropping both games, 9-4 and 7-5.
• Junior Sean Sullivan was the hitting star during the week, collecting at least two hits in every game while hitting a whopping .619 (13-of-21) over the five games, including a career-high four hits in the series finale at CSU Bakersfield.
• With his performance at the plate, Sullivan boosted his season average to .511, which leads all Division I hitters entering play on Monday. His on-base percentage of .569, however, is only third.
• Shirley had a productive week overall at the plate, going 9-for-22 to put up a slash line of .409/.458/.591 with four RBIs and three runs.
• Sophomore Tyler Fagler made his first collegiate start on Sunday, lasting three innings while surrendering four runs.
• After allowing just six stolen bases in the first 10 games, Dartmouth was victimized eight times by the appropriately named Roadrunners on Sunday, the most by a Big Green opponent in at least 23 years.
Overall Record vs. Opponents
• The only time Dartmouth and San Jose State played against each other came in 2009 with the Spartans taking two of three, though the Big Green won the final game, 7-4, bouncing back from a 19-0 defeat four days earlier.
• Dartmouth has a perfect 2-0 record against Westmont, having defeated the Warriors in 1993, 10-7, then again eight years later, 9-1.
• The series with Cal Poly dates back to 2001 with the Mustangs winning five of the eight meetings. The most recent one came three years ago, a 7-1 Big Green victory that featured a Kyle Holbrook two-run triple and a perfect ninth with two strikeouts by right-hander Mike Concato.
Scouting the Opponents
• San Jose State has posted a record of 8-10 entering today's game, taking two of three from Fresno State over the weekend to improve to 2-6 in the Mountain West Conference.
• The Spartans are hitting just .269 as a team, but Brett Bautista would be leading the nation with a .538 average if he had played in one more game thus far.
• The 6.51 ERA comes with the hitter-happy environment that is the MWC, including 5.5 walks and 7.8 strikeouts per nine innings.
• Westmont is no slouch on the diamond with an 18-11 record, though just 10-10 over its last 20 games.
• Luke Coffey is the Warriors' best hitter (.404/.488/.654) with six homers and 31 RBIs.
• The staff ERA is 5.00 but the pitchers have walked nearly 5.0 per nine innings.
• Cal Poly is off to an 8-12 start to the season, most recently dropping two of three on its home field to San Diego State in three close games, with its best win coming over Arkansas on Feb. 23, 4-3.
• The offense averages just under five runs a game with a slash line of .279/.366/.364. Four regulars are hitting between .300 and .320, with Tate Samuelson leading the team with a .316 average, two homers and 15 RBIs.
• The pitching staff features two strong starters and two more shut-down relievers, but overall has an ERA of 5.16 with a 2-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Probable Starting Pitchers
• I should just suspend this section for this week, or at least these first two games. I have no clue what name will come out of Bob Whalen's hat as the starter tonight. And since San Jose State just played three conference games over the last two days, there is no telling who will be on the mound.
• I will take a stab at the Westmont game, likely to have sophomore RHP Austen Michel (0-0, 4.50) back on the bump to make his second start of the season following a three-run outing over four innings against UC Santa Barbara. As for Westmont, let's guess 6-6, 275-pound RHP Toby Dunlap (2-1, 3.28) will climb the hill.
• To start the Cal Poly series, looks like Coach Whalen will go with his projected weekend rotation, beginning with junior RHP Cole O'Connor (1-2, 2.70), who pitched a career-high eight innings in a complete-game, 4-1 loss at Cal State Bakersfield last Thursday. The Mustangs will likely go with their rotation from last weekend, beginning with RHP Jarred Zill (0-0, 2.25) who made his first start against San Diego State since undergoing Tommy John surgery last year, allowing four runs, one earned, over four frames.
• Up next will be senior RHP Jack Fossand (1-1, 6.00) to build upon his win in a five-inning, two-run performance last week against CSUB. Cal Poly has senior LHP Trent Shelton (1-2, 2.93) lined up for Friday's game, he of the 35 strikeouts and just four walks in 30.2 innings this season.
• Wrapping up the 10-game trip will be senior RHP Clay Chatham (1-1, 5.40) who uncharacteristically walked three batters over six innings at CSUB while taking the 9-4 loss. The Mustangs will turn to a rookie in RHP Darren Nelson (2-2, 2.92), who is averaging just over four innings over his six starts.
What's Up Next
Dartmouth returns to Hanover to host Quinnipiac in the home opener at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park (being plowed as I type this) on Wednesday before hitting the road for the Ivy League-opening series at Penn next weekend.
Sullivan Leading Nation in Hitting
Perhaps the power of St. Patrick's Day has given junior Sean Sullivan the luck of the Irish. The second baseman enters Monday's game at San Jose State leading Division I with a .511 average (among qualified hitters) after going 13-of-21 (.619) during the first five games of the spring-break trip. Sullivan has had at least two hits in nine of the 11 games thus far — including all five in California — including a career-high four hits on Sunday at Cal State Bakersfield. And his .569 on-base percentage ranks third among NCAA Division I players. Not bad for a guy who had 20 plate appearances over his first two years with the team.
Power Outage
During the four-game series at Cal State Bakersfield, Dartmouth was held without an extra-base hit in each of its three losses, despite collecting 25 hits total. The lone game the Big Green won against the Roadrunners featured four doubles and the first home run of the season for senior Dustin Shirley. Dartmouth has had nothing but singles in five of the 11 games this season, including the 4-1 victory over Georgetown on March 4.
Fossand for the Win
Dartmouth has one win to its credit thus far on the spring-break trip, which was earned by senior Jack Fossand. The right-hander picked up his first win of the season and third of his career by hurling five innings of two-run ball despite allowing 11 base runners (five hits, four walks, two hit batters).
Hunter Catches His Prey
Entering the game at Cal State Bakersfield on March 16 with an 11-6 lead and two men on base with one down in the seventh, freshman Max Hunter was able to preserve the lead and finish off the victory by hurling the final 2.2 frames while surrendering just one earned run and striking out three. While it wasn't quite a save situation, he did save the game for the Big Green and now has an ERA of 1.59 over his first two outings spanning 5.2 innings with four punchouts and without walk.
Shirley You Can't Be Serious
I simply wanted to use that line for a note, doesn't matter that it makes no sense. Senior Dustin Shirley not only had the only Big Green home run last week, he also extended his hitting streak to career-best nine games by hitting safely in each contest. He nearly matched Sullivan with two hits in each of the first four games before settling for a solitary safety on Sunday. The converted outfielder hit .409 (9-for-22) for the week.
Complete Game for Naught
It had been nearly two full years since a Dartmouth pitcher tossed a complete game in a nine-inning contest before junior Cole O'Connor performed the feat at Cal State Bakersfield on March 15. Unfortunately for the right-hander, the Big Green could only scratch out a single run in a 4-1 defeat, wasting O'Connor's quality start of three earned runs over eight innings during which he threw just 99 pitches. He also was the second Dartmouth pitcher to throw eight frames in a game this year after it being done just once all of 2017.
