PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Dartmouth softball team began Ivy League play at Penn on Saturday in doubleheader action, falling 8-0 in the first game and winning 4-2 in the second game.
The Big Green are now 7-12 with a 1-1 mark in conference action, while the Quakers move to 4-13 on the season and have a 2-3 Ivy record.
Penn took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Sarah Cwiertnia hit a two-run homer. Dartmouth's Loghan Thomas led off the third inning with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error, but was unable to score as the next two batters fouled out and the final grounded out.
The fourth inning began with the home team still holding a 2-0 lead and the Big Green continued to fight. Morgan Martinelli singled to left field and Jade Bravo came in to pinch run for her. Taylor Ward was walked, advancing Bravo to second, and McKenna Gray followed with a single, loading the bases with two outs. Thomas popped up taking the third out, but Dartmouth held the Quakers to only two runs until the sixth inning.
Another close chance arrived in the top of the sixth with Martinelli on first base and two outs, Ward hit a double to left field, advancing Martinelli to third. That was as close as the Big Green would get to cutting the lead as Gray flied out to end the inning.
Even with the lead, Penn hung six runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Quakers' Lucy Yang hit a two-run homer to take a 4-0 lead with only one out. The next two batters each hit a single before Tabitha Dyer was hit by a pitch loading the bases. Sam Pederson reached first on a fielding error in the next at bat, and all three runners scored, unearned.
With a 7-0 lead, Cwiertnia returned to help score again, hitting a single RBI to take the 8-0 win.
Freshman Shelby Wilkison pitched all 5.2 innings, facing 30 batters she allowed nine hits and eight runs with three strikeouts, two walks and four errors.
In game two of the afternoon, the Big Green got right to work with a Micah Schroder home run in the first inning.
Neither team scored again until the road squad tallied two more runs in the top of the fifth, when Schroder hit a two-run homer, batting in Tiffany Dyson and taking a 3-0 lead. Penn responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the lead to one with only one inning remaining.
Dartmouth scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh, when Schroder scored an unearned run as Martinelli reached first base on a fielding error, extending the lead to 4-2.
Senior Breanna Ethridge tossed all seven innings of the second game, where she faced 29 batters, striking out seven, walking one, allowing six hits with two runs and two errors.
The Big Green and the Quakers face off again tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 p.m. to finish the three-game series.
