Home at Last
After spending the first month of the 2018 season on the road, Dartmouth finally plays its home opener on Wednesday when it hosts the Quinnipiac Bobcats. The homecoming will be shortlived, however, with the Big Green playing their Ivy League-opening series in Philadelphia at Penn this weekend.
Last Week in Review
• Dartmouth wrapped up its spring-break trip to California with four losses and a rainout last week.
• The first game of the week was the closest the Big Green came to a victory, falling at San Jose State, 4-3, though junior Sean Sullivan had his second straight four-hit game, which boosted his average to an obscene .540 at the time.
• Fielding woes did Dartmouth in against Cal Poly in the opening game of that series as the Mustangs scored six unearned runs in beating the Green, 11-3.
• The second game at Cal Poly was undone by some uncharacteristic wildness on the mound as Dartmouth pitchers walked a season-high nine batters in a 10-2 defeat.
• The Mustangs completed the three-game sweep with a 5-0 blanking of the Big Green, holding them to six hits.
• Sullivan, who hit .528 over the nine games in California, ended the week with a .483 batting average, which ranks second among Division I players, while his .551 on-base percentage ranks fourth.
• Senior Dustin Shirley also had a productive trip, hitting .342 with a pair of doubles and his first home run of the season, the only Big Green four-bagger out West.
• Dartmouth ended the trip losing its last six games, its longest skid since opening the 2016 season with six consecutive losses.
Overall Record vs. Quinnipiac
• This is the 18th meeting between the two teams, all coming since 2001 after the Bobcats moved up to the Division I level, with Dartmouth holding the 10-7 advantage.
• The Big Green had won seven in a row before Quinnipiac won the last two meetings, 11-5 in 2014 and 5-4 two years ago, both in Hanover.
• Dartmouth head coach Bob Whalen has been the head coach for each of those 17 games, giving him a 10-7 record against Quinnipiac.
• While there have been 17 games thus far in the series, only seven have been played in Hanover with the Big Green 4-3 in those showdowns.
Scouting the Bobcats
• After Quinnipiac opened the season with three losses at Abilene Christian, it won eight of its next 11, including a three-game sweep of William & Mary and two more over College of Charleston.
• The Bobcats are currently in the midst of a seven-game skid, however, getting swept by UNC Wilmington and Stony Brook before dropping a 7-5 decision at Rhode Island on Tuesday.
• Quinnipiac has yet to play a home game — its home opener was washed out last Tuesday — meaning the team will play its first 26 games outside of Hamden.
• The team is hitting .249/.308/.350 with just one player above .300 in Brian Moskey at .316 while leading the team in six other offensive categories, including hits (25), runs (15) and slugging.
• Ben Gibson is the best power threat with four homers, and Liam Scafariello leads the Bobcats with 16 RBIs despite a .210 average — 11 of his 17 hits have gone for extra bases.
• The pitching staff sports a 4.81 ERA, striking out 7.2 batters per nine innings but walking 5.0 per nine as well.
• Tyler Poulin has the best ERA among the starters at 3.45, but more than half of the runs he has allowed have been unearned (16 of 28).
• Mike Davis is the closer with three saves to his credit, although his ERA is at 7.36. The top reliever has been Arthur Correira who sports a 2.77 ERA over 13.0 innings.
• The true Achilles heel of this team has been its defense with 52 errors in 21 games for a .934 fielding percentage, which ranks among the bottom five nationally.
Probable Starting Pitchers
• Nobody has told me. Your guess is as good as mine.
What's Up Next
Dartmouth travels to Penn for its first Ivy League series of the year with two nine-inning games on Saturday followed by the third and final contest on Sunday. The next week, the Big Green return to Hanover for four games, starting with a mid-week matchup with Holy Cross on April 4 followed by an Ivy League series against Columbia.
Sullivan Keeps Hitting
Junior Sean Sullivan was come out of nowhere to beome Dartmouth's best hitter of the non-conference portion of the schedule. The second baseman hit .528 (19-of-36) over the nine games in California to boost his average to .483, the second-highest in the nation. He earned Ivy League Player of the Week honors in the middle of the West Coast trip and has already posted 10 multi-hit games this season, helping him lead the country in hits per game (1.93). And his .551 on-base percentage is the fourth-highest among Division I players.
Biondi Park, Season 10
As per usual, Dartmouth spent the first month of the season on the road, this time with a trip to Georgia Tech, another to the state of Florida and finally a nine-game trek in California. The Big Green are happy to be back at home in Hanover where they have had terrific success since the construction of Biondi Park prior to the 2009 campaign. In the first nine seasons here, Dartmouth owns a record of 98-31, a .760 winning percentage.
Shirley You Aren't Streaking?
Well, not any more, but senior Dustin Shirley just had a 12-game hitting streak snapped in the final game on the trip to the West Coast. That is not only the longest hit streak of his career, but the longest by a Big Green hitter since Matt Parisi ended the 2013 campaign by hitting safely in 13 straight games, then adding to his total the following year with hits in the first two contests as well.
Hunted Becomes Hunter
Dartmouth has been searching for consistent pitching in the early going this season, and it may have found a rookie to fill the role. Freshman left-hander Max Hunter has taken the mound in relief on three occasions, posting an ERA of 1.12 in 8.0 innings of work. He has allowed just two runs, one earned, on nine hits without issuing a free pass while striking out five. With performances like that, Big Green fans might start reminiscing about southpaw Kyle Hunter '13, who was 14-8 with a 3.71 ERA in his Dartmouth career.
Power Outage
During the four-game series at Cal State Bakersfield, Dartmouth was held without an extra-base hit in each of its three losses, despite collecting 25 hits total. The lone game the Big Green won against the Roadrunners featured four doubles and the first home run of the season for senior Dustin Shirley. Dartmouth has had nothing but singles in six of the 15 games this season, including the 4-1 victory over Georgetown on March 4.
