HANOVER, N.H. — The Ivy League office announced its weekly baseball awards this afternoon with Dartmouth senior Dustin Shirley being selected as the Player of the Week for his performance against Brown in a doubleheader on Saturday. He is the second Big Green player chosen as the Player of the Week this season and fourth weekly award winner for Dartmouth.
Shirley, a native of Los Angeles, California, provided much of the offense for the Big Green in the twinbill split, going 4-for-8 with three doubles, a home run, three runs scored and three RBIs. His biggest moment came in the opener when he belted a 2-1 pitch well over the left-field fence for a walk-off, solo homer to lift Dartmouth to a 2-1 victory. The team co-captain had also doubled and scored the first run for the Green in the second inning, and Dartmouth led the rest of the game until the Bears knotted the score with a run in the ninth.
In the second game, Shirley rapped out a pair of two-baggers, the second of which drove in two runs to key a four-run eighth, tying the game at four. He did not get another chance in the ninth, however, and Dartmouth ultimately came up a run short in a 5-4 loss.
Shirley leads Dartmouth in doubles (11), RBIs (21) and stolen bases (5), plus is tied for the team lead with three home runs. The outfielder is hitting .288/.343/.448 overall on the season.
Dartmouth (11-19-1, 7-6-1 Ivy) will complete its three-game series with Brown (10-23, 5-12 Ivy) on Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. after Sunday's game was postponed due to rain. The contest will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network, now available on Apple TV, Roku and the ILN app for Android and Apple devices, with Wayne Young '72 calling the action.
Notes: Other Big Green players to earn a weekly honor from the league this year are senior pitcher Clay Chatham (Pitcher, March 5), junior second baseman Sean Sullivan (Player, March 19) and freshman catcher Bennett McCaskill (Rookie, April 9) … the last Dartmouth player to hit a walk-off home run was Matt Parisi with a two-run shot against Harvard on April 27, 2014 … the Big Green had not had a walk-off win of any kind since a 7-6 win over Columbia two years ago.
