JAMAICA PLAIN, Mass. — Junior
Lauren Sapone led a cluster of Dartmouth runners at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown hosted by Boston College, finishing 27th overall to help the 27th-ranked Big Green women's cross country team place fifth overall amongst the 24 competing squads and first among teams from the Northeast.
Sapone completed the 5K course in 17:52.0, just four-tenths of a second ahead of sophomore
Glennis Murphy in 30th (17:52.4), who won the Souther Invitational back in Hanover last weekend. Taking 34th place was senior
Olivia Lantz with a time of 17:55.7, while seniors
Lillian Anderson (17:58.1) and
Grace Thompson (17:59.8) crossed the tape in 37th and 39th places, respectively.
Dartmouth's top-five finishers were separated by a mere 7.4 seconds, easily the smallest margin in the field.
Providence's Abbey Wheeler won the race by nearly seven seconds with a time of 17:09.7, besting Minnesota's Bethany Hasz (17:16.4) and Virginia rookie Abigail Green (17:16.8). But it was Ole Miss that took home the team crown with 102 points, edging out Georgia Tech which had 105. Utah beat out the Golden Gophers by a single point for third place with 161, just six ahead of the Big Green's 167, despite Minnesota placing two runners in the top five.
Brown was the only other Ivy League school running today, taking sixth with 188 points, while Wake Forest (200), Virginia (222), Syracuse (242) and Eastern Michigan (254) rounded out the top 10.
Dartmouth will have a week off before competing at the New England Championships on Oct. 6.
