Playa Flamingo, Costa Rica –
Andi Norman '18 has relocated to Costa Rica for a year-long fellowship with Beyond Sports. Norman was one of nine ambitious women selected for this competitive opportunity where she will design and implement the Girls Leadership Academy for Service and Sport (GLASS). Norman's development at Dartmouth in film production, leadership, and promoting women in athletics makes her a crucial asset to this Beyond Sports Fellow Team.
GLASS is Beyond Sports' newest endeavor. This ten-day program, led entirely by the fellows, will host high school female athletes in Costa Rica beginning in the spring of 2019. With a goal to empower the next generation of female leaders, the fellows are designing a curriculum of sport-specific training, leadership development, service-learning, and adventure excursions.
While at Dartmouth, Norman built an impressive resume that makes her a perfect fit for the role. Norman demonstrated her leadership ability as a team leader of the women's basketball team, a participant of the DRIVE Leadership Program, and the recipient of the Agnes B. Kurz award ⏤ presented to the woman in athletics who best demonstrated proficiency in athletics as well as a dedication to the furthering of women's sports. In addition to her insight on leadership development, Norman will be able to employ her film degree as the sole fellow with film and media experience. Her senior thesis ⏤ a film entitled Play Like a Girl, highlighting the female athlete experience ⏤ showcases her passion for giving back to the female athlete community.
"It's always been important for me to give back to the community that shaped who I am today," Norman says. "When I heard about this opportunity, I immediately jumped at the chance to travel abroad while also developing an experience for young women to grow as athletes and leaders."
