HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth baseball head coach
Bob Whalen announced the hiring of
David Vandercook, a former All-Ivy League third baseman at Columbia, as an assistant coach for the Big Green this season. Vandercook will coach the infielders and help nine-year veteran assistant
Jonathan Anderson coach the hitters.
Vandercook comes to Dartmouth after two years on Mike Leonard's coaching staff at Middlebury College where he coached the outfielders, infielders and hitters. The Panthers posted the second-most victories in school history during the 2017 season — Vandercook's first with the team — with a 22-16 record, placing second in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). Last year, Middlebury boasted the league's Defensive Player of the Year in shortstop Brooks Carroll while finishing at .500 with a 16-16 overall mark.
Prior to his work at Middlebury, Vandercook spent the 2016 campaign at Claremont McKenna College under former Cornell head coach Bill Walkenbach. He also coached for two summers with the Scorpions South high school travel team based out of Palm Beach, Florida.
A 2015 graduate of Columbia University with a bachelor's degree in history, Vandercook was a three-year starter and helped the Lions win the conference crown each of those three seasons. He was a member of the All-Ivy League First Team in both his junior and senior years at third base, earning the honor unanimously in his final year during which he hit .308/.421/.535 with seven home runs, 14 doubles and 36 RBIs. He was also a top defender at the hot corner, committing just one error in conference play that season.
