HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team overcame an early deficit to defeat Brown, 4-2, Saturday afternoon at Chase Field for its first Ivy League win of the 2018 season.
Â
Freshman
Cecelia Monnin's first career goal came in the 54th minute and proved to be the winner.
Â
The Bears (3-6, 0-2 Ivy) got on the board first when Gina Openshaw netted her fifth of the season just 3:29 into the opening half. The Big Green (4-4, 1-1 Ivy) pulled even in the 19th minute when junior
Carmen Braceras finished off a great passing play with freshman
Gracyn Campbell to send the teams to intermission tied, 1-1.
Â
Junior
Katie Spanos' team-leading fifth goal of the season was a beautiful run just one minute and 41 seconds into the second half, beating the defense up the middle before a perfectly placed shot inside the far post. Monnin's goal was the result of a beautiful play as the freshman batted the ball out of the air and into the net after an initial shot from a corner play.
Â
That goal proved to be the winner as Brown's Hannah Leckey answered back in the 63rd minute only to see
Jocelyn Wulf score in the 68th to push the lead back to a pair.
Â
The timely scoring in the second half was the difference after a lackluster first 35 minutes of play that saw just a combined 10 attempts on net. In all, Brown actually held an 18-17 edge in shots, while shots on goal were 11-11.
Â
Goalkeeper
Hailey Valerio stopped eight shots in the game and was aided once by
Sara Falkson's defensive save early on. The Bears' Katie Hammaker stopped seven in the loss.
Â
Sophomore
Lia Constantine picked up a pair of assists in the game as she set up Monnin and Wulf's tallies.
Â
Dartmouth is back at home next week, hosting Penn Saturday, Oct. 6 at noon.
