THIS WEEKEND
Having played at home since the start of the New Year, the Dartmouth women's hockey team will conclude its five-game homestand this weekend against a pair of nationally ranked conference opponents. The Big Green will take on No. 7 Cornell on Friday evening and No. 8 Colgate the following afternoon.
LAST TIME OUT
Dartmouth was edged by Harvard, 1-0, at home last Friday.
The Big Green looked strong, outshooting the Crimson, 27-25. The home team was trailing in shots until the explosive third period that saw Dartmouth with a 15-7 shot advantage.
Christine Honor looked good in net, stopping 24 shots and ending the game with a .960 save percentage.
Tess Bracken led the way with nine shots.
This is the first time the Green have outshot the Crimson since the 2015-16 season.
With under five minutes to go in the first, Harvard (5-8-2, 4-5-1) looked as if it would take the lead when the puck bounced off Honor's extended glove and landed behind her. With the goalie down, Dartmouth (3-13-1, 2-8-0) defense worked hard to help her clear the puck and keep the game scoreless heading into the intermission.
After 40 minutes of scoreless play and a few close calls for both teams, Harvard scored the first goal of the game just 17 seconds into the third. Sophomore
Jennifer Costa had a nice chance soon after and, although the Crimson's goalie had lost sight of the puck, the shot sailed just wide.
The Green turned up the aggression in the final minute, taking 12 shots while on the power play, but they were turned away each time. Dartmouth fought until the very end, but ran out of time to tie things up.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED
Cornell heads into the weekend with an overall record of 9-2-5 and 7-2-1 in ECAC Hockey play, which puts it second behind Princeton. Since their game against the Big Green in late October, the Big Red have gone 6-2-5. Most recently, Cornell had a 1-1 home weekend, falling to Princeton (5-0) before rebounding to take down Quinnipiac (2-1). Maddie Mills is first on the team in assists (10) and points (19), while Kristin O'Neill leads the way with 11 goals.
LAST TIME AGAINST CORNELL
On Oct. 27, the Green suffered a 4-0 loss to the Big Red at Lynah Rink. It was a big day for
Kayla Wormsbecher, who made both her collegiate debut and started her first game, making 34 saves in all.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Before playing its game against Harvard on Friday, Colgate had a record of 12-6-4 and a 6-2-2 mark in conference action. The Raiders have gone 8-3-4 since last meeting the Big Green in October. Last weekend, Colgate took down Quinnipiac (5-2) before tying league-leaders Princeton (4-4). Prior to a loss to Mercyhurst on Jan. 6, the Raiders had been unbeaten since a 6-0 loss to the Tigers back in November. Three players have already got over 20 points each; Jessie Eldridge is first (16-12-28) and is followed by Malia Schneider (12-13-25) and Shae Labbe (10-13-23).
LEADING THE WAY
As they have done for the past few weeks, Bracken and McClanahan remain tied for first on the team with eight points each. Bracken has netted four goals and has four helpers, while McClanahan has three goals and five assists.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Honor has played in and started 15 games so far this season and has made 400 saves and allowed 45 goals. In the game against Quinnipiac,
Shannon Ropp made her first appearance of the 2018-19 season, making six saves and allowing one goal.
Kayla Wormsbecher has made two starts and has appeared in three contests, stopping 62 shots while allowing eight goals.
