HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's hockey team fell to No. 7 Cornell, 3-0, at Thompson Arena on Friday evening.
"We played a really good team tonight," head coach
Laura Schuler said. "I thought we had a good first period. We just didn't play well for a solid 60 minutes. I didn't think our D zone was good enough to be able to compete for the remainder of the game.
Kate Landers,
Sara McClanahan and
Chloe Puddifant all played a great game and had good chances, but unfortunately couldn't capitalize.
"We have to take more pride with shooting with our heads up," Schuler continued. "I thought Shannon did a really good job for us in net. She kept them off the scoreboard and gave us a chance in the third."
After Cornell (10-2-5, 8-2-1) opened scoring in the first, the visitors bookended the second with goals, finding the back of the net 26 seconds in and again with just 10 seconds to go to make it a 3-0 game after 40 minutes. Dartmouth (3-14-1, 2-9-0) had some good chances to close the gap, including a nice breakaway opportunity by sophomore
Jennifer Costa, but goalie Lindsay Browning stopped each one.
Senior netminder
Christine Honor had some quality saves of her own, namely two big ones in a row midway through the second to keep Cornell at bay. The Mississauga, Ontario, native was in net for the first two periods and ended up with 17 saves. Classmate
Shannon Ropp took over for the third and had 10 saves, while keeping the Big Red out of the net for the final 20 minutes.
The Green had an 11-7 shot advantage in the opening frame. After a tough second period that saw the Big Red take the lead in shots, Dartmouth came back stronger in the third and narrowly trailed, 10-7. Cornell ended up with a 30-22 advantage. The home team's penalty kill was on point as they killed off all four of the Big Red's power play opportunities.
The Big Green will return to the ice on Sunday with a 2 p.m. game against No. 8 Colgate.
