HANOVER, N.H. – Freshman
Celine Pietraszek scored her first collegiate goal 54 seconds into overtime to lift the Dartmouth women's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Brown at Thompson Arena on Saturday.
The Big Green picked up their first win of the season and two important points.
After Brown (0-4-0, 0-2-0) tied it up at 1:48 of the third, neither team could score another in a 21-shot period, so the game headed to overtime. Following a few wide shots by Dartmouth (1-3-0, 1-2-0), Pietraszek ended the game, scoring the first goal of her career.
Six other players ended up on the scoresheet: sophomore
Lotti Odnoga led the way with a pair of assists. Freshman
CC Bowlby netted her second of the season, while sophomore
Givanna Foglia scored her first. Senior
Bailee Brekke, junior
Emily McLaughlin and sophomore
Sara McClanahan were credited with assists.
"This was a good win for us," head coach
Laura Schuler said. "Brown really packed in their D-zone on us and we had to show a lot of patience and discipline to stay the course. Hannah played another great game and two more players got their first career goals for us. I am very proud of how we played and of our overall efforts."
Despite a 16-8 shot advantage, Dartmouth was kept out of the net during the opening stanza. Brown had a few chances, but it was the home team that controlled the action from start to finish.
The second was a lot more eventful, with a combined three goals. During a Brown penalty early in the second period, Dartmouth took nine consecutive shots, six of which were either blocked by a Bear or turned away by goalie Hayley Klizcko. The 10th shot was the charm, as Bowlby scored with 26 seconds left on the power play to break the tie.
Dartmouth enjoyed that lead for three minutes before Brown evened the score. The Green continued to pepper Klizcko with shots until Foglia got past her at 15:42 to give Dartmouth its one-goal advantage back. That lasted until 1:48 of the third, when Shay Maloney tied the score once again.
The Big Green and the Bears played out the remainder of the third tied at two goals apiece. Heading to overtime for the first time this season, Dartmouth remained in control, ending the game less than a minute into the extra frame.
The home team had a 42-30 shot advantage and went 1-for-1 on the power play, while Brown went 1-for-5. Freshman
Hannah Humphreys had another great game in net, making 28 saves while earning her first win.
Dartmouth will go on its first conference road trip of the season next weekend, heading out to face Quinnipiac and Princeton.
