Anna Luce led Dartmouth with 13 points
CHICAGO – Dartmouth's offense was put on hold Wednesday night as Loyola Chicago ran away with a 61-40 victory at Gentile Gym. The Ramblers (7-0) stay perfect and continue to build on their best start in program history, while the Big Green (3-2) could not find a shooting groove as they were held to 27.9 percent from the field.
Anna Luce led the Big Green with 13 points. Annie McKenna dropped eight with seven rebounds and three assists, Asha Taylor finished with seven points and five rebounds and Elle Louie had six points, eight rebounds and four assists. Four players scored in double figures for Loyola, who won the rebounding battle 54-39.
"We had a hard time scoring and defending the paint tonight," said Belle Koclanes the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "You can look at it and say that we held them to 20 points below their average, but we only scored 40. We have a lot of things to figure out with this young group and we are learning a lot of hard lessons about what it takes to win games."
After Loyola took a 5-0 lead in the first two minutes of action, McKenna shouldered the load for the Big Green with a pair of 3-pointers to close the gap to 7-6 with 5:54 on the clock. The Ramblers then closed the quarter on a 9-2 spurt to end the first ahead, 16-8.
Dartmouth was forced to call a quick timeout in the second when Loyola scored back-to-back buckets to go up 20-8 at the 8:29 mark. Jimena Abejon responded with a jumper, but the Ramblers scored the next six points to extend their lead to 26-10. Louie made a layup to jumpstart a 10-2 Dartmouth run that spanned four minutes to make it a 28-20 ballgame. Loyola then got back on track to make the halftime score, 33-22.
The Ramblers won the opening five minutes of the third, outscoring the Big Green 9-2, to bring their lead to 41-24. Louie then drove and scored in the paint and Lenart hit a jumper to make it 41-28 at the 2:07 mark. Dartmouth had a hard time picking up ground as the teams traded baskets to end the quarter and Loyola went into the fourth ahead, 47-33.
Another fast start by the home squad made it tough for Dartmouth to claw back. The Ramblers raced out to a 10-4 run to extend their lead to 52-36. As for the entire final quarter, Loyola outscored Dartmouth, 14-7, to secure the victory.
Dartmouth stays in Chicago to take on Northwestern on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET. The Wildcats are receiving votes in the latest AP top-25 poll.
