EVANSTON, Ill. – There was no quit in the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team during its 2019 season opener at perennial national power and seventh-ranked Northwestern.
Â
The Big Green (0-1) fought until the final whistle and pushed back on the Wildcats (2-0) in the second half, before succumbing to the final buzzer, 21-15, at the brand new Ryan Fieldhouse.
Â
Five Dartmouth players scored multiple goals in the contest, led by three each from
Campbell Brewer and
Elizabeth Mastrio.
Sophia Turchetta,
Katie Bourque and
Kellen D'Alleva all finished with two tallies apiece.
Â
Northwestern also posted a deep scoring attack as Lauren Gilbert posted four goals and five points and Lindsey McKone scored a trio of goals and dished out four helpers for a game-high seven points. In total, the Wildcats had seven multi-goal scorers.
Â
"I'm really proud of our second-half effort tonight," head coach
Danielle Spencer said. "We stepped up at halftime and won the second half. Both teams had the same number of shots tonight, and credit to Northwestern goalkeeper Julie Krupnick for having an incredible game.
Â
"I would really like to see our team clean up the yellow cards; we had five, which is five too many in my mind, and they scored on most of those man-up opportunities," Spencer continued. "Besides that, I'm excited to carry our second-half momentum into Sunday's battle."
Â
Highlighting the play of the NU keeper was warranted as Krupnick stopped 16 shots, thwarting Dartmouth's attack at key times that allowed the home team to hang on.
Â
Dartmouth's
Kiera Vrindten — the 2018 Ivy League Goalkeeper of the Year — made 10 saves in the game.
Â
A relatively even game throughout was reflected by many statistics across the board. However, Dartmouth dominated on the draw control, winning 27 to Northwestern's 11. Senior captain
Kathryn Giroux —already the Ivy League's all-time leader — had 10, while Bourque posted a career-high nine and
Claire Marshall adding five.
Â
The Big Green remain on the road, playing at Michigan in Ann Arbor Sunday at noon in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
