SMITHFIELD, R.I. –Bryant walked away with a 6-5 victory over the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team on Saturday in a very low-scoring game that saw neither team net more than two goals in any given quarter. The Big Green dipped to 0-2 overall, while the Bulldogs improved to 2-1.
Jimmy Heidt led the team with three points from two goals and an assist, while five other players ended the contest with one point each.
Daniel Hincks played all 60 minutes for the second game in a row, making a season-high 15 saves.
"Today was a heartbreaker," head coach
Brendan Callahan said. "We hit the crossbar as time expired and we were a few inches from tying the game on the final possession. I thought we played much better and harder today than a week ago. Our defense put in one heck of an effort and gave us a chance down the stretch.
"I love the way we rode today," Callahan continued. "I think some injuries on the d side caused us to be out of sync in the clearing game and it really hurt us to give them so many second chances. Ultimately, we put ourselves in position with multiple chances down the stretch. Now, we have to learn how to win. We will take a lot away from this one."
The home team got on the board first at 11:27 in the opening quarter, but that lead did not last too long, as
Ben Martin got one past goalie Kevin Beimfohr two minutes later to tie things up. Bryant pulled one ahead five minutes later, but
George Prince answered soon after (2-2).
A single goal was netted in the second, one that gave the Bulldogs a 3-2 edge at 12:32. Shots on goal were even at 4-4 during those 15 minutes and the goalies made a combined seven saves to keep both teams at bay for the time being.
Bryant made it a two-goal game early in the third, but Heidt's first and second goals of the year that were scored three minutes apart made for a tied game. Less than a minute later, the Bulldogs broke the tie and took their 5-4 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Although Bryant extended its lead once again at 11:40,
Jack Richardson's first of the year pulled Dartmouth within one just 13 seconds later. The Green continued to fight, hitting the crossbar in the final second of play, but ran out of time to score the tying tally.
On Saturday, March 2, Dartmouth will travel to New York to face Wagner.
