HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth baseball team was swept at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park in an Ivy League series for just the second time as Penn followed up yesterday's 21-15, 21-inning marathon with two more victories on Sunday, 13-1 and 15-3. The Quakers (17-8, 6-3 Ivy) blew open both games in the final three frames with the Big Green (9-17, 3-6 Ivy) short on pitching help.
Both Peter Matt and Matt O'Neill had identical lines in both games of the twinbill, going 4-for-6 with two runs and an RBI in the opener and 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs in game two, while Josh Hood homered in both contests for Penn.
Dartmouth freshman
Justin Murray (1-2) pitched admirably for the first six innings in the first game, allowing three solitary runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings to Penn's high-octane offense that averages more than 10 runs a game this season. But with the score at 3-1 entering the seventh, the Quakers got to him with a pair of singles and a two-run double by Craig Larsen, who had homered in the fourth. When Murray was lifted for a reliever, Penn added a single and a Hood home run to suddenly make it an 8-1 contest.
The Quakers tacked on five more in the ninth to blow the game wide open as Dartmouth finished the game with a pair of position players on the mound.
Mitchell Holcomb (5-0) went the distance, throwing 119 pitches over his nine innings and surrendering the one run on a two-out RBI infield hit by senior
Matt Feinstein in the fifth. It was one of just three hits he allowed, walking five and striking out five as well.
In the nightcap, junior
Alec Vaules (1-1) earned his first conference start having thrown 10 consecutive shutout innings over his last three appearances. That streak swiftly came to an end when Matt hit his second pitch for a triple and O'Neill followed with one of his three doubles on the day. But after Sean Phelan singled, Larsen hit a sacrifice fly to be the first of seven straight batters Vaules retired.
Penn added single runs in the third and fourth before Hood belted a two-run homer in the fifth, his sixth of the season and third of the series, to make it a 6-0 game. Freshman
Trystan Sarcone pitched two scoreless innings of relief before the Quakers exploded for eight runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Dartmouth avoided the shutout with three runs in the ninth, loading the bases before junior
Trevor Johnson's fielder's choice brought home one run and a throwing error in an attempt to double him up at first allowed another to score. After a balk, senior
Steffen Torgersen hit a shot in the hole that was deflected into foul territory by a diving shortstop that let Johnson score and Torgersen make it to second with a double. But there would be no miracle comeback as Brendan Bean got the final out on a ground ball to short.
Christian Scafidi (3-1) was even more effective than Holcomb in the opener, shutting out the Big Green over eight stanzas on four hits and a walk while striking out seven.
Dartmouth will be back in action at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park on Tuesday when UMass Lowell (7-23) comes to town for a matchup at 3 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Wayne Young '72 and Brett Franklin calling the action.
Notes: The only time Dartmouth had been swept at home since Biondi Park debuted in 2009 was in 2014 against the Quakers as well when the teams played just twice … this was also just the third series defeat at home for the Big Green since the venue opened … Penn tied the all-time series between the two teams at 89-89-2 … the 49 runs scored on the Big Green this weekend were the most in an Ivy League series since Brown scored 49 over four games in 2007 … Dartmouth has been touched for 10 or more runs for five straight games for the first time in 40 years … junior
Michael Calamari was the only Big Green hitter to collect hits in both games, extending his hitting streak to eight games … junior infielder
Blake Crossing made his pitching debut in the opener, giving up a hit to the first batter he faced before inducing a double play to end the ninth.
