HANOVER, N.H. — The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced their Google Cloud Academic All-District Baseball Teams yesterday with Dartmouth junior right-hander
Alec Vaules being among those selected for District I. This is the second straight year the Big Green have had a player earn a spot on the prestigious team.
A native of Pittsford, New York, Vaules walked on to the team as a freshman and had thrown just 2.2 innings in his first two seasons. But the engineering major with a 3.85 GPA made the most of his opportunities this spring, finishing fourth on the squad with 34.0 innings while posting a 2-3 record with one save. Vaules made his first career start during the spring trip to Florida, hurling five innings of three-run ball against Bradley, but his next three outings were his best of the season.
On March 27, Vaules held Quinnipiac scoreless for five innings on two hits while striking out four to pick up his first collegiate victory in a 9-2 triumph. Three days later, he twirled three perfect innings with four more whiffs at Columbia to earn his first save. Vaules then extended his scoreless streak to 10 innings with two more frames of shutout baseball, striking out three along the way, in a relief stint at Holy Cross.
Four weeks after his first win on the mound, Vaules defeated Siena on the road with another five-inning start for a 6-4 victory.
Vaules was one of four Ivy Leaguers to be named to the team, joined by Harvard first baseman Patrick McColl, Yale shortstop Simon Whiteman and Brown outfielder Joe Lomuscio.
Dartmouth finished its season last weekend with a record of 15-26 overall and 8-13 in the Ivy League, ending a streak of 11 straight winning seasons in league play, which tied a school record.
Notes: Vaules will go on the ballot for Academic All-America honors, which will be announced in June …
Dustin Shirley '18 was the Dartmouth player that was honored with a spot on the team last year … before that, Jeff Keller '14 made the team twice and went on to earn Academic All-America First Team honors in both 2013 and 2014.
