HANOVER, N.H. — Cole Sulser, a member of the Dartmouth Class of 2012, received the call up from the minor leagues to join the roster of the Tampa Bay Rays of Major League Baseball on Monday. The 29-year-old is the second pitcher in that Big Green class to ascend to the big leagues, joining Kyle Hendricks of the Chicago Cubs
A right-hander out of Santa Ysabel, California, Sulser helped Dartmouth win four Rolfe Division titles and a pair of Ivy League crowns in his four seasons playing for Big Green head coach
Bob Whalen. Sulser won 20 games (second all-time at Dartmouth) against just six losses to go with a 4.18 ERA, striking out 202 batters and walking only 39 in 204.1 collegiate innings before being drafted in the 25th round of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Cleveland Indians. He set a program record with a perfect 8-0 record as a sophomore and earned All-Ivy honors three times in his career, including the first team as a junior in 2011.
It has been a long road to MLB for Sulser, having endured two Tommy John surgeries (one in college and another as a professional that cost him the 2015 season). This season, he was pitching in the Triple-A International League for the Durham Bulls, the top farm club for Tampa Bay, after being traded by Cleveland last December. In 49 appearances spanning 66.0 innings, he had a 6-3 record with two saves and a 3.27 ERA. Sulser also struck out 89 batters and walked only 24 while opponents hit a mere .208 against him. In six minor league seasons, he posted a 3.91 ERA over 444.1 innings with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 4-to-1 (513 whiffs, 134 walks).
When Sulser makes his first appearance in a game, he will become the 31st Big Green alumnus to play in the big leagues and third this decade, joining Hendricks and the Miami Marlins' Ed Lucas '04 who made his MLB debut on May 30, 2013. Other notable Dartmouth alums to make it to "The Show" are current Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim manager Brad Aumus '91, Mark Johnson '90, Mike Remlinger '88, Jim Beattie '76, Pete Broberg '72 and former Dartmouth Athletics Director and New York Yankee four-time All-Star third baseman Red Rolfe '31.
Tampa Bay is scheduled to host the Baltimore Orioles for a doubleheader beginning at 3:10 p.m., which could lead to Sulser making his first Major League appearance on the mound today.
