HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth is set to begin its second season under
Bo Oshoniyi, The Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer. Year one saw the team battle through injuries, but the Big Green pushed through to finish the year 7-1-3 in its last 11 games, including a 4-1-2 Ivy League record and an undefeated slate at Burnham Field.
The season begins on Sept. 6 at No. 1 Wake Forest before the team makes their 2019 home debut the following week against UMass on Sept. 10. The Big Green then stay at Burnham Field when they host preseason ranked No. 7 Michigan State on Sept. 14.
Oshoniyi: "Our goals always remain high, the Ivy League championship and NCAA Tournament are always what we strive for. Another goal is a signature win, which we have an opportunity to do with teams like Wake Forest, Michigan State and UConn on the schedule. We were undefeated on Burnham last season and to have the opportunity to play some of those games at home this year is big for the college and the community."
2018 RECAP
Dartmouth started slow with a 0-4-2 record against tough competition. Then the Big Green flipped the switch with its first victory at UMass in double overtime, starting a seven game unbeaten streak.
After a hard fought overtime defeat at Columbia, Dartmouth capped off the final three games of the year without a loss by taking down Harvard, Cornell and Brown.
THE RETURNERS
The Big Green return four All-Ivy selections from last season. Sophomore defender
Matt Pickering was the only freshman in 2018 to earn a First Team honor, while junior midfielder
Dawson McCartney was named to the Second Team and the senior pair of defender
Henry Baldwin and midfielder
Braden Salvati each picked up an Honorable Mention nod.
Other key returners are junior forward
Tiger Graham, who scored four goals last year and junior midfielder
Kota Sakurai who had a goal and two assists in 2018. Also back are senior midfielder
Jesse Scanlon, senior midfielder
Zach Kalk, junior defender
Matthew Ranieri, sophomore defender
Jordan Bailon and sophomore midfielder
Ohad Yahalom.
Oshoniyi: "We are really excited about the group coming back this season. We had some injuries last year and a lot of guys got more minutes and are further along in their progression because of that. Our senior class and our captains
Braden Salvati,
Zach Kalk and
Henry Baldwin bring great leadership and we are looking forward to getting started with everyone."
GOALKEEPERS
Dartmouth has plenty of depth at the goalkeeper position as three net protectors from 2018 are back for this season. Senior
Henry Stusnick and junior
Christopher Palacios saw the majority of time in the goal last year, while sophomore
Alex Budnik had a five-save shutout against Lehigh.
Palacios started 10 games and played in 11, posting a 5-3-2 record with a team best 37 saves, a .755 save percentage and one shutout. Stusnick saw action in seven contests and started six of them. He led the way with a 0.60 goals against average, an .840 save percentage and three clean sheets.
Oshoniyi: "We have arguably the top three goalkeepers in the Ivy League and they are going to battle. The three of them have a great working releationship and they are going to compete all year long and we will see who is going to come out as the starter. It is a good problem to have as a coach to have that much depth at the position."
CLASS OF 2023
Eight newcomers make up the class of 2023 for the Big Green and bring potential on the offensive side of the field. Making up the freshmen class are midfielders
David Alino,
Pedro Campos,
Jack Casey,
Eric Sachleben,
Garrett Socas and
Alex Van Schalkwyk and forwards
George Altirs and
Clayton Molter.
Oshoniyi: "It's a really strong class, they showed well in the green and white game and against Southern New Hampshire. They are going to be pushing for minutes right away and that's a good thing because it makes us deeper. Everyday they are competing for a spot and it will be exciting to see how quickly they can develop and contribute."
