The Big Green finish the season with a statement win
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Dartmouth sent the 2019-20 team out with a 72-58 victory at Brown Saturday night. With the win, the Big Green (10-17, 4-10 Ivy League) finish the season sixth in the Ivy League standings. The Bears (8-19, 2-12) finish the year in eighth place.
Four members of the Big Green finished in double figures. Paula Lenart recorded a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds and sunk a 3-pointer, while Annie McKenna led the team with 15 points, six rebounds and six assists. Anna Luce had 14 points and Katie Douglas tallied 11 points and matched her career high of five assists.
"We exploded in the first quarter and it felt good to get that out of our system, because we've had that in us all season," said Belle Koclanes, the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "When Brown cut into our lead we stayed poised, composed and executed to hold them off."
Dartmouth scored 31 points in the first, its most in a quarter this season. The Big Green shot the lights out with a 71.4 shooting percentage from both the floor (10-of-14) and from 3-point range (5-of-7). In her final game, Lenart drilled her third triple of the season and seventh of her career at the 3:49 mark. Douglas sunk two 3-pointers, while McKenna and Abejon each had one in the quarter to take a 31-14 lead.
The Bears caught fire with three consecutive 3-balls to spark a 13-5 run, cutting its gap to 36-26 with 5:29 until the half. Brown made it an eight-point game with under a minute left in the half until Allie Harland hit a three in the closing seconds to push the Big Green lead to 41-30 at the break.
Luce capped off an 8-0 quarter starting run with a 3-pointer and a layup to make it a total surge of 11-0 dating back to the end of the third to extend the lead to 47-30. Brown outscored Dartmouth 15-10 in the final seven minutes of the third to trim its deficit to 57-45 after three.
The bears fought hard to get back into the ballgame and only trailed by five with 3:55 to go in regulation. Dartmouth stuck together and McKenna hit the dagger with 1:22 on the clock to build the lead back to 10 and put the game away.
"We play for our seniors and for every member of this team," continued Koclanes. "So to send them out into the world with a victory makes me proud of our team."
