HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's basketball team used a 26-8 run to turn a 16-point deficit into a two-point lead, but Bryant immediately reeled off 12 consecutive points to regain control, on the way to downing the Big Green, 89-70 in a spirited Friday evening showdown in Leede Arena. In a game that featured 43 combined fouls and 37 combined turnovers, freshman
Brandon Mitchell-Day shined for Dartmouth, as he scored his first-career points in the first half, and went on to score 15 in the second, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 6:20 remaining.
With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 0-2 while Bryant improves to 2-0.
"It was a game of runs and a game about discipline," said Big Green head coach David McLaughlin. "I feel like when our group lacked discipline, which we did at times, we played into Bryant's hands a little bit with their style of play. When we played with discipline, we went on close to a 20+ point run ourselves and were able to get the lead, then lacked discipline at the end when they went on their game-ending run.Â
"As a team, we have to learn how to be more disciplined at both ends of the floor, we have to learn how little details matter all the time and we have to learn about decision making on the court," McLaughlin continued. "As we do that, we have to grow and become tougher and do that together."
Mitchell-Day's effort came on 8-of-10 shooting. He was a perfect 7-of-7 from inside the 3-point arc. Sophomore Ryan Cornish added 16 points to tie a career high, while classmate Cade Haskins also had 16. Both were 50 percent from 3-point range, Cornish 3-of-6 and Haskins 4-of-8. Junior Dusan Neskovic also posted double-figure points with 11.
Sherif Gross-Bullock led Bryant with 27 points, 13 of them coming from the free throw line. Earl Timberlake added 19.
A wild first half included 22 combined fouls and 25 turnovers (15 for Dartmouth and 10 for Bryant). The Bulldogs were whistled for six fouls within the game's first three minutes. Just over three minutes in, Cornish hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the span of 24 seconds to turn a 4-2 deficit into an 8-4 lead.
Bryant answered with four straight points and six of the next eight as a Kvonn Cramer jumper gave the Bulldogs a 12-10 advantage with 13:46 on the first-half clock.
With Dartmouth leading 13-12, Bryant scored four straight and eight of the next 11 to open a 20-15 lead following a Gross-Bullock trey just over midway through the half. From there, the margin remained between one and five until the final five minutes of the period. The Bulldogs ended the half on a 15-5 run to turn a 26-23 lead into a 41-28 halftime advantage.
That lead swelled to 17 on multiple occasions early in the second half. With Bryant leading 58-42, Dartmouth staged an impressive run. It began with a Haskins 3-pointer, followed by four consecutive Big Green points from Mitchell-Day. Senior Cam Krystkowiak got into the action with a 3-pointer and layup less than three minutes later. Eventually, a Mitchell-Day 3-pointer put Dartmouth ahead for the first time since early in the first half, 68-66, with 6:20 on the clock.
The Bulldogs had an immediate answer, however, staging a 12-0 run to open a 78-68 lead and Dartmouth couldn't recover. The Big Green got back within eight, but that's as close as they would come.
For the game, the Bulldogs shot 52.5 percent from the field (31-of-59), including 33.3 percent from 3-point range (5-of-15). Dartmouth finished at 47.2 percent (25-of-53) and 35.7 percent from behind the arc (10-of-28). The Bulldogs held a 37-32 edge in rebounds.
