HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's hockey team jumped out to a 4-1 lead Friday night, but ultimately fell to the Cornell Big Red at Thompson Arena. A five-goal second period for No. 9 Cornell was too much to overcome, as the Big Green fell by a score of 6-5 in ECAC Hockey conference action.
Four different goal scorers lit the lamp for Dartmouth, as
Currie Putrah, Carlie Primomo,
Kenzie Bachelor and
Laura Fuoco each tallied goals for the Big Green. Putrah found the back of the net twice in the first period, her second multi-goal performance of her collegiate career.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Maggie Emerson stopped 36 shots, including 17 in the second period. The Big Green won the faceoff battle against Cornell, 34-31, as senior
Sydney Herrington won 69.2 percent of her draws, winning nine of 13. Dartmouth fell to 1-5-0, all conference play, while Cornell improved to 6-1-0 with a 4-1-0 ECAC Hockey record.
Cornell opened the scoring, as Lily Delianedis found the back of the net 3:55 into the first. Carlie Primomo responded under two minutes later, as a strong individual effort tied the contest at 1-1. Her unassisted goal marked the first of her collegiate career.
The Big Green capitalized on their first power play opportunity of the evening around the midway mark of the first period. Fuoco won an offensive-zone faceoff to
CC Bowlby, who sent a pass over to Putrah near the top of the circle. Putrah rifled a shot past Cornell goaltender, Deanna Fraser's blocker to give Dartmouth its first lead of the night.
Dartmouth kept the momentum rolling as
Lauren Messier made a strong play in the neutral zone, which sent Bowlby and Bachelor toward Cornell's net with speed. Bowlby sent a blistering cross-ice pass to Bachelor, who corralled the puck and put it past Fraser to increase the Big Green lead to two.
Putrah put an exclamation point on the first frame, as she redirected a shot from Izee Powell to give Dartmouth a 4-1 lead into the intermission. The Big Green made the most of their opportunities in the first 20 minutes, scoring four goals on just nine shots on goal. Fraser was pulled following Putrah's second goal, as Belle Mende took over duties between the pipes for Cornell.
Cornell came out of the first intermission with a purpose, quickly trimming Dartmouth's lead to two just 1:10 into the period. The Big Red cut the deficit to one at the 9:10 mark of the frame, as Alyssa Regalado notched her fifth of the season.
Georgia Schiff found both the equalizing and go-ahead marks for Cornell, scoring consecutive goals at 13:26 and 17:49 to give the Big Red a 5-4 lead. Makenna Van Gelder added on Cornell's fifth unanswered goal with 53 seconds remaining in the period to increase Dartmouth's deficit to 6-4. The Big Green were outshot 22-4 in the second period.
Dartmouth and Cornell battled throughout the third period as neither team could improve its position as time dwindled. Fuoco picked up her first goal of the season on the power play with 5:50 remaining in the third. She took advantage of a rebound following a shot from Putrah to give Dartmouth life down the stretch. The Big Green finished the night 2-2 on powerplay opportunities.
Cornell held Dartmouth at bay for the remainder of the game, escaping Hanover with a 6-5 win. Dartmouth fell to 43-42-7 against the Big Red in the all-time series and still search for its first home victory of the year.
Dartmouth is set for another ECAC Hockey contest tomorrow at Thompson Arena against No. 4 Colgate. The Big Green battle the Raiders at 3 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet internationally.
