MANCHESTER, N.H. — Junior forward
Jenna Donohue found the back of the net with just seven seconds remaining against Saint Anselm to give Dartmouth a 2-1 win on Saturday. The Big Green collected their second non-conference victory of the season in Manchester, New Hampshire in the first game of a home-and-home series.
Dartmouth looked sharp throughout the contest, outshooting Saint Anselm 46-19 over the course of the afternoon. Vanessa Stamper registered her second goal of the season, while
Currie Putrah,
Annie King,
CC Bowlby and
Kenzie Bachelor each recorded assists.
Sophomore goaltender
Maggie Emerson stood tall in net, stopping 18 of 19 shots she faced, including 11 in the second period. The Big Green won the faceoff battle against the Hawks, winning 32 of 58 draws.
Georgia Kraus was effective in the circle throughout the game, as she won eight of 12 faceoffs.
"It's always nice to get a win, and the game-winning goal by Jenna (Donohue) was critical at the end," head coach
Liz Keady Norton said. "I thought we turned it up towards the end, we outshot them, we just need to find the back of the net more often. Saint Anselm is a tough opponent. They play hard, they're well coached, and I look forward to tomorrow."
Saint Anselm opened the scoring in the fourth minute of play, as Kelly Golini scored her ninth of the season. The Hawks received an assist from Audrey Jackson, who fired a low shot for a rebound, which Golini capitalized on.
Other than the Hawks early goal, the first period was all Dartmouth. The Big Green peppered Saint Anselm's goaltender, Allie Kelley, with a plethora of shots throughout the opening frame.
Dartmouth's tenacity paid off in the 16th minute of the first. Vanessa Stamper went hard to the net, rifling a pair of shots toward Kelley. Her second shot created a chance in front, which went off a Saint Anselm defender and into the back of the net to tie the contest at 1-1.
The teams went into the first intermission knotted up, 1-1. Dartmouth dominated the shot battle, challenging Kelley with 18 shots on goal, while the Hawks only managed four shots through 20 minutes of play.
The second period featured a goaltending battle, as Emerson and Kelley combined for 23 saves as neither conceded a goal.
Both teams had a variety of opportunities throughout the second period. The best chance Saint Anselm generated came just two minutes into the period, as Emerson went across her crease to make a spectacular stop with pressure in front.
The Big Green pressured Kelley with 12 shots on goal, while Emerson turned all 11 Saint Anselm shots aside in the second period.
The third period saw Dartmouth once again dominate, as the Big Green outshot the Hawks 16-4 in the final 20 minutes of play. Despite numerous offensive chances, Dartmouth was unable to solve Kelley for much of the period.
With just seven seconds remaining in the contest, Donohue ripped a shot over Kelley's blocker to give the Big Green a 2-1 lead. Her third of the year was assisted by Bowlby and Bachelor. Dartmouth dumped the puck into Saint Anselm's zone to secure its second-straight win.
"CC (Bowlby) made a great pass, she was very patient," Donohue said about the game-winning play. "Georgia (Kraus) was screaming for me to shoot and I just saw and opening and shot it."
Dartmouth improved to 3-6-0 and 2-0-0 in non-conference competition, while Saint Anselm fell to .500 and a record of 9-9-1 on the year. The Big Green improved to 2-1-0 against the Hawks in the all-time series.
Dartmouth and Saint Anselm turn their attentions to a rematch, as the teams close out the home-and-home tomorrow afternoon. Puck drop at Thompson Arena is slated for 3 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet internationally.
