TROY, N.Y. – A third-period goal from junior
Annie King broke a scoreless tie to provide the offense, and sophomore
Maggie Emerson recorded a 17-save shutout to anchor a strong defensive effort, as the Dartmouth women's hockey team picked up its first win of the season on Friday evening, beating RPI by a 2-0 final. The Big Green came out of the gate firing, literally, in posting the game's first 11 shots on goal. It wasn't until their 34th shot of the evening that they were able to beat Engineers' goalkeeper Amanda Rampado, but it was all Dartmouth would need.
With the win, the Big Green improve to 1-3-0 overall and 1-3-0 in ECAC Hockey. RPI falls to 2-9-0 and 0-3-0.
"Tonight's game was a full team effort," said head coach
Liz Keady Norton. "We have been focused on playing a thorough and disciplined 60 minutes and our team took another step in a positive direction in that department tonight. When you get as many shots as we did, and our goalie gets a shutout, you will always have a chance to win. Tonight, it was the second-effort plays, willingness to block shots and win battles that made a huge difference. Overall, a good team win against a well-coached and hard-working opponent in RPI."
RPI netminder Rampado finished the evening with 39 saves, including stopping all 25 shots sent her way over the first two periods. On the other side, the shutout was the second of Emerson's career.
Along with King's goal and an empty-netter from senior
Sydney Herrington, senior
Celine Pietraszek dished two assists and senior
Currie Putrah added one as well. Sophomore
Laura Fuoco led the Big Green with seven shots on goal.
The first period saw Dartmouth go on a power play less than a minute in and record eight shots on goal in the first 3:19. The Big Green fired 11 shots on goal before RPI had its first 12:02 into the contest.
Dartmouth held a 11-6 edge in second-period shots, but one of the best chances was stopped by Emerson with just over 15 minutes on the clock to keep the game scoreless.
Just less than 10 minutes into the third period, King came down the left side and roofed the puck from a tough angle to give the Big Green a 1-0 advantage.
That score remained under the 1:06 remaining, as Herrington converted the empty-net goal for a 2-0 advantage, which proved to be the final.
Final shots were 41-17 in favor of Dartmouth. Dartmouth finished 0-for-4 on the power play while RPI was 0-for-2.
The Big Green remain on the road Saturday to face off at Union at 3 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet internationally.
