NEW YEAR'S DAY HOOPS
Dartmouth battles Cornell in the 2022-23 Ivy League opener on New Year's Day in Ithaca, New York. It's the first meeting of the conference foes since Dartmouth edged Cornell on the road last season for its first conference win.
ALL-TIME VERSUS CORNELL
Dartmouth is 62-22 all-time against Cornell after splitting the series last season as both sides were victorious on the road. The Big Green have won three of the last four against the Big Red and are 6-4 in the last 10. Dartmouth enjoyed a 14-game win streak over Cornell from 1986 until 1993 - the most dominant stretch for either program in the all-time series. Two of the last three meetings have been decided in overtime.
LAST TIME OUT
Dartmouth hung with defending Atlantic 10 champion UMass early and even held a 17-16 lead at the end of the first quarter, but succumbed to the Minutewomen's hot shooting down the stretch in a 77-58 loss to conclude the non-conference slate. UMass shot better than 60 percent in the second half and became the fourth team this season to shoot better than 50 percent from the field against Dartmouth, joining UAlbany, Iowa and Holy Cross. 12 different Big Green players scored in the loss.
SCOUTING CORNELL
Cornell wrapped up its non-conference slate with a 7-6 record after last season's 9-16 mark. A win over Division II opponent Clarion saw the Big Red score a season-high 93 points, while leading scorer Ania McNicholas logged Cornell's first triple-double since the 1987-88 season with 13 points, 10 boards and a single-game program record 10 steals. McNicholas is one of 14 players across the country to register a triple-double this season and following Sunday's action, Dartmouth will have played against two of those 14 players (Iowa's Caitlin Clark). Cornell earned a 53-45 win over UAlbany, the only common opponent, while Dartmouth was downed by the Great Danes, 73-45.
IVY LEAGUE OPENERS
Dartmouth is 3-7 in its last 10 Ivy League openers, including a last year's 45-36 home loss to Cornell on Jan. 2. The Big Green's last win in a conference opener came on Jan. 11, 2020 with a 63-62 home win over Harvard.
HARLAND'S HOT SHOOTING
Australian senior Allie Harland has made at least one 3-pointer in each of the last seven games and is 6-of-7 from downtown in the last three, including a 3-of-4 showing against No. 13 Iowa. Harland is shooting 38.9 percent from deep this season.
POINTS OFF THE BENCH Grace Niekelski came off the bench Wednesday night and led Dartmouth with 10 points as the lone scorer in double figures. It was her fifth time this season scoring 10 or more points and all but one of those performances have come off the bench. The Big Green posted a season-high 32 bench points against UMass after scoring 31 against both UC Irvine and No. 13 Iowa.
SHOWING GROWTH
The highlights of Dartmouth's non-conference slate were wins over Merrimack and Monmouth, which avenged losses from the 2021-22 season. The Big Green also came close to another pair of wins with narrow one-possession losses to New Hampshire and Vermont. Dartmouth finishes its challenging non-conference schedule, which featured matchups with several defending conference champions (including No. 13 Iowa), averaging 57.1 points per game - more than 10 points better than last season's 46.6 mark through all non-conference games.
LAST YEAR'S THRILLER Mekkena Boyd's layup in the final seconds was the difference maker in a back-and-forth contest that featured 12 ties and 15 lead changes. Allie Harland led the team with a career-high 15 points in the first Ivy League win of the season.
LOOKING AHEAD
Dartmouth returns home for the first time since Dec. 13 to host Yale on Friday, Jan. 6 and Brown the following day in back-to-back Ivy League action. Friday serves as Dartmouth's annual Pride Game as the program celebrates the LGBTQ+ community.
