BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — A goal in the final two minutes from senior captain
Currie Putrah lifted Dartmouth past Stonehill in non-conference competition on Friday afternoon. The Big Green downed the Skyhawks by a score of 3-2 on the road in their final contest of 2022.
Putrah,
CC Bowlby and
Cally Dixon each found the back of the net for the Big Green in the win.
Annie King,
Abby Grexton,
Sydney Herrington and
Vanessa Stamper joined the goal-scoring trio on the stat sheet with assists. Sophomore goaltender
Maggie Emerson turned 17 shots from Stonehill away to record her fourth win of the season.
Dartmouth challenged Stonehill netminder Eve Stone with 32 shots and limited the Skyhawks to just 19 over the course of the afternoon. The Big Green won 29 of 53 faceoffs, with Bowlby leading the way for her team in the circle, winning 11 of 16 of her draws.
"It was an ultimate team win," assistant coach
Max Gavin said. "Everyone bought into their role today. For us to be successful, that's what we have to do. I think we reflected a lot on the first half of the season and came back refreshed understanding what we needed to do to get a win.
After a slow start to the opening frame for both squads, Dartmouth was awarded a power play after Stonehill committed a bench minor. The Big Green jumped out to an early lead, as Bowlby cashed in on a breakaway to give the Dartmouth the 1-0 advantage. Bowlby's fourth goal of the season was assisted by King.
The Skyhawks responded just over a minute later, cashing in on a power play to tie the contests, 1-1. Stonehill kept the momentum following another penalty call. Sydney Russell rifled a shot over Emerson's shoulder on the penalty kill to give the Skyhawks their first lead of the afternoon.
The second period featured competitive action from both teams, as Dartmouth was unable to close the gap for most of the period. The Big Green found an equalizer with 6:34 left in the second frame.
Grexton forced her way into the offensive zone, which set the Big Green up for an opportunity in front. A pass reach Dixon's stick in front and she made the most of her opportunity, beating Stone over her glove to tie the game, 2-2.
The Big Green and Skyhawks battled throughout a tightly contested third period. Dartmouth sent numerous chances toward Stone, but were unable to take the lead throughout much of the final frame.
With 1:37 left in the period, Stamper set Putrah up in the slot, who poked a puck into the back of the net to give Dartmouth a one-goal lead. Putrah's third of the season was enough to push the Big Green past their final non-conference foe of the season.
"It was a fresh start for us. I think it's a reset button," Putrah said following the win. "We can reflect on how the first half of the season went, learn from our mistakes and build each other up moving forward. We have a lot of momentum now and I think the energy is good. Everyone is fresh, and I think that's going to be very important for us when we get back into conference play."
Dartmouth takes a 5-11-0 record into the new year, while Stonehill falls to 9-11-1 on the season. The Big Green hold a 1-0-0 record in the all-time series against the Skyhawks after a win in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
The Big Green travel for a pair of ECAC Hockey conference matchups against Princeton on January 6 and Quinnipiac on January 7. Both games are set for 3 p.m. puck drops and a stream will be available on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet internationally.
