UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Dartmouth men's tennis suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday against Penn State by a score of 4-1. The Big Green are now 3-1 while the Nittany Lions are 3-2.
Â
"We were expecting a tough challenge on the road,"
Xander Centenari '13, the John Kenfield and
Chuck Kinyon Head Coach of Men's Tennis said. "That's what we wanted, and that's what we got. We played smart, aggressive doubles on all courts, which I was really pleased with. We were tested in singles and came up a bit short. This is a young team that is just starting to learn how small the margins are and how important it is to embrace the tough moments, to dig deep, and to fight hard. Every match is an opportunity to learn and improve, and we plan to learn and improve from this weekend."
Â
Dartmouth fought hard to win the doubles point following wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions.
Dominik Pauli and
Anders Gibbons started the day off with a 6-3 victory at the top spot before PSU added a win of its own at the No. 3 position. After a 7-5 win by
Pierce Widdecombe and
Alex Knox-Jones, the win went to the Green.
Â
The Nittany Lions turned things around and went on to win four straight singles matches to clinch, but Dartmouth battled the entire time. Two of those matches went to three sets, while another on court five that went unfinished was in its third set when it was ended early.
Â
Next up, the Green will compete at the ECAC Indoor Championship at Cornell from Feb. 18-20.
