HANOVER, N.H. – No. 4 Dartmouth heavyweight rowing is returning to the water on Saturday after five long months away from action.
Â
The Big Green will race in the Alumni Cup at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts, against No. 20 Holy Cross, No. 17 Columbia and MIT. Eight other colleges will be sharing the water in races that span from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. Dartmouth's events start at 10:40 a.m. and end half an hour later.
Â
In the first Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association (IRCA) poll of the season that was released on March 29, the Green are ranked fourth out of the 25 teams included. Yale received eight first-place votes, while Washington earned the remaining three. Dartmouth came in at No. 10 in the final regular-season standings that were released in May of last year.
Â
Last season, abbreviated as it was due to COVID-19, was a historic one for the heavyweight program. Returning to competition just three weeks before the IRA Regatta, the Big Green sent all four of their boats to the Grand Finals, seeing the V8 and 3V8 finish third and their 2V8 claim silver. Dartmouth placed third overall and took home the Chapman Award for seeing the biggest jump in the standings (235 points better) since the last regatta in 2019.
Â
Wyatt Allen, the Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Heavyweight Rowing, was voted as the IRCA Heavyweight Coach of the Year for guiding the Green to their first V8 medal in 17 years. He was also named the Coach of the Year for the IRCA.
Â
Next weekend, Dartmouth will head to Connecticut for a race against Yale.
