The Dartmouth men's heavyweight crew will be competing this weekend on beautiful Lake Morey located about 18 miles north of Hanover in Fairlee, Vermont.
Â
The two-day event will consist of sixth-ranked Syracuse and fifth-ranked Dartmouth going head-to-head for the Packard Cup on Saturday followed by the addition of 14th-ranked Boston University to the mix on Sunday.
Â
The oldest continuously active heavyweight competition for Dartmouth has been with Syracuse. In 1958, Dr. Anthony Ladd of Syracuse established the Packard Cup in honor of his father-in-law, Dr. Edward N. Packard, stroke for the Syracuse crew in 1904. Until 1968 the race was at two miles, when it was reduced to 2000 meters.
Â
Last competed in 2019 before the pandemic, the Big Green fell to the Orange in a tight race with the two teams separated by less than a second (5:51.4 to 5:52.2).
Â
Dartmouth won three straight from 2013 to 2015 before Syracuse won three of the following four years.
Â
Although the race was not competed last season, the Big Green varsity finished third at the IRA followed by Syracuse in fourth place.
