Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2024 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers" presented by the Norwich Inn.
This installment focuses on
Ellie Blain of the volleyball team. The Palm Beach Gardens, Florida native was a second team All-Ivy selection in 2021 after starting all 23 games for the Big Green while leading the team in points (354.5, 3.90/set) and kills (317, 3.48/set).
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Ellie Blain: Sophomore summer has been amazing so far! The weather has been beautiful. Also, it has been great being able to catch up with friends in a smaller environment and to bond with other sophomores that I might not have previously known as well. I am still taking three classes this summer and lifting and conditioning with my team, but in my free time, I go hang out by the river.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
EB: My favorite place on campus would have to be Foco! This is my favorite spot to catch up with my friends and see people outside of volleyball or classes throughout the week. And, I love a good scampi night and the fresh chocolate chip cookies!
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
EB: When I visited campus, I was immediately drawn to Dartmouth's close-knit community and evident traditions. Within Dartmouth Volleyball, I was so excited to be a part of the DVB family. I loved that I was able to compete at a top D1 level, while also working hard in the classroom.
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
EB: If I could play another sport at Dartmouth, it would have to be Sailing. My dad is a sailmaker down in Florida, so we have always been near the water. Also, ever since I was seven years old, I have competitively sailed in Nova Scotia during the summertime. I have sailed Optis, 420s, and Bluenoses.
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
EB: Although I am not a swimmer, I am a huge Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky fan. I have grown up watching the Olympics, and it is so inspiring to see these athletes, two of the best in the world, work hard every day. At an event in high school, I was honored to attend one of Phelps' speeches, and ever since that day, I have had so much respect for him. Not only did he talk about competing and working hard, but he also shared his mental health story, and how it is okay to sometimes struggle as an athlete. Phelps has taught me that it's okay to have bad days as long as you keep your head held high and never give up.
DS: What has been your best on-court memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
EB: My favorite volleyball memory was during our home opener tournament against UConn. We had a great win in four sets, and the stands were packed with friends, family, and other fans! I will never forget this game, as it was a great momentum booster during my first official season.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
EB: For starters, there are seasons in Hanover! I grew up in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, so the cold was definitely an adjustment. However, with the right gear and a good mindset, the weather and winter activities can be very fun in Hanover.
DS: What show do you binge watch?
EB: I could rewatch Friends any day of the week. I am always up for a good laugh.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
EB: Be confident! If you put in the work and give it your all, then you should be proud of your performance. Positive self-talk is one of the most important aspects of my life as an athlete.
