Dartmouth’s 13 goals through five games are its most since 2018
HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team rebounded from an early 1-0 hole to score the next four goals, on the way to a 4-2 win over Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon at Chase Field. The victory marks the second straight for the Big Green, who improve to 2-3 on the young season. Four different goal scorers paced Dartmouth, with Payton Altman's third-quarter tally proving to be the game-winner.
"The first quarter didn't work and I think the girls did a much, much better job in quarters two through four of stepping the energy up and bringing a little more togetherness to what we were doing," said Dartmouth head coach Mark Egner. "That really played into what we were hoping to do, which was get some goals on the board."
Goal scoring continued to be a story for the Big Green on Sunday. With Dartmouth's four scores, the Big Green now have 13 goals through five games – their most through any five-game stretch since the 2018 season. It's also the most through the first five games of any season since 2018.
Dartmouth also has multiple goals in three straight games for the first time since early in the 2019 campaign. The Big Green have now scored 4+ goals in back-to-back games for the first time since Sept. 9-10 of 2017. Dartmouth's 10 goals over its last three games mark its most over a three-game stretch since scoring 11 from Sept. 1-9 of 2018.
"We're getting those goals spread around the team," said Egner. "We're getting everyone involved, which means that we're going to be able to deal with dips and rises in form and be able to be threatening in a lot of different spaces."
Sacred Heart scored just 2:31 into the game and took that lead into the second quarter. Dartmouth broke through at 17:22 as Bronwyn Bird made a reverse hit towards goal, and Holley Cromwell did the rest for her second goal of the season.
Dartmouth added two more in the third quarter. It began with Altman scoring early in the third quarter for a second straight game. Just over three minutes into the stanza, Altman beautifully redirected a Bird shot from the top of the circle, past Sacred Heart goalkeeper Samantha Maresca for a 3-1 advantage.
"For where we are as a program, learning to win is important," said Egner. "It's a habit; it's something we need to get used to doing. Being able to close games out and take a lead and keep a lead, those are all really important lessons, especially as we get closer and closer to those Ivy weekends. We're going to have some big double competition weekends that we want to make sure we keep going and keep this run of form alive."
Next up, the Big Green will host Merrimack next Sunday at 12 p.m. on ESPN+.

The Pioneers responded less than a minute later on a direct shot off a penalty corner. Sacred Heart went on to hold a 7-2 edge in fourth-quarter shots, but goalkeeper Hatley Post made a pair of saves while Pease made a big defensive stop for a second straight game, as Dartmouth walked away 4-2 winners.What a way to score a first-career goal for Boau-Lilly Shepherd!
