SATURDAY AFTERNOON IN THE BIG APPLE
Dartmouth faces a tough test on the road against Columbia, who currently leads the Ivy League and is receiving votes in USA Today Women's Basketball Coaches Poll.
LAST TIME OUT
Dartmouth challenged preseason favorite Princeton in the first half and led by as many as five in the second quarter, but ran out of gas in the fourth. Princeton's offense hit its stride and shot 60 percent from the field in the second half en route to a 79-59 win.
BOYD LEADING THE WAY
Mekkena Boyd set a new career-high and tied a game-high with 15 points against Princeton, while also leading Dartmouth with seven rebounds. This came after excellent 3-point shooting performances against Penn (3-for-5) and Harvard (4-for-6). She has only led Dartmouth in scoring in three games this season, but has done so in each of the last two.
EXPECT PLENTY OF THREES
Columbia has attempted 20 or more 3-pointers in 16 of their 19 games. Dartmouth also likes the triple and has attempted 20 or more in 12 games along with Brown and Penn. Columbia's Abbey Hsu leads the nation in 3-pointers per game (3.58). After Saturday, Dartmouth will have faced three of the NCAA's top-11 volume 3-point shooters (Iowa's Caitlin Clark and UMass' Sydney Taylor).
SCOUTING COLUMBIA
You don't have to look deep into the national rankings to understand why Columbia is garnering national attention. The Lions rank top-10 in scoring offense with 81.9 points per game and have scored 90 or more points in seven games this season, including a 103-point onslaught against Marist. Only once has Columbia been held under 60. Ball movement looks to be a key to success behind the high-powered offense as Columbia ranks fifth in the nation in assists per game (19.8).
LIPPOLD FACES FORMER TEAM
Second-year Columbia assistant coach Cy Lippold was a two-time Academic All-Ivy honoree while playing for the Big Green (2017-18 and 2018-19) prior to heading to Mercer as a graduate assistant. Lippold was Dartmouth's most recent 'So You Want To Be A Coach' selectee before
Kaiyah Corona was announced as a member of the program's 20th class.
WHAT'S AHEAD
The four-game road stretch continues as Dartmouth heads to Brown on Friday, Feb. 3 and faces Yale the following day.
