ITHACA, N.Y. — The Dartmouth women's hockey team utilized an influx of offense and a strong performance in net from
Elle Sullivan to take down No. 10 Cornell on the road. The Big Green received goals from four different athletes to secure their first win over a ranked opponent this season Saturday afternoon.
Jenna Donohue,
Maura Fiorenza and
Laura Fuoco each tallied a goal for the Big Green, while
CC Bowlby scored twice for Dartmouth against Cornell. Sullivan stopped 31 of 32 shots on goal to pick up her first-career ECAC Hockey victory.
The Big Green won the faceoff battle against Cornell, winning 52.4 percent of draws throughout the afternoon.
"I was really impressed with the full-team effort," head coach
Liz Keady Norton said following the win. "Everybody was involved. From bench energy to just doing the little things right, I'm overall really proud of this team today."
Dartmouth and Cornell battled in a back-and-forth opening period, which saw 20 combined shots on goal. Sullivan made 11 saves, while Cornell's Belle Mende turned nine shots away as both secured their nets to keep the contest scoreless.
Both teams killed off one minor penalty in the first, while Dartmouth held a slim 11-9 advantage in faceoffs through 20 minutes.
The first half of the second period saw the Big Green pepper Mende with nine shots on net. This explosion of production paid dividends for Dartmouth, as the visitors jumped out to a two-goal lead in the early stages of the period.
Donohue opened the scoring with 14:49 remaining in the middle frame. Fuoco stole the puck behind Cornell's goal and sent the puck through traffic right to Donohue's stick. The junior ripped a puck past Mende to collect her team-leading eighth goal of the 2022-23 season to put Dartmouth in front.
The Big Green struck again just 2:19 later, as Fiorenza sent a shot from the point that beat Mende to give the Big Green a 2-0 lead. Fuoco won a crucial offensive zone faceoff back to Powell, who set her defensive partner up for her first goal with the Big Green.
"I got the D-to-D pass from Izee (Powell) and I tried to skate over along the blue line," Fiorenza said of her goal-scoring play. "I saw a lane and tried to put a low, hard shot on net. I saw it get through, and when Jenna (Donohue) put up her hands, I knew it went in. It was an awesome moment."
Dartmouth continued to push the Big Red on their heels with fast-paced action in the offensive zone. Fuoco extended the Big Green lead to three with 6:36 remaining in the period on a delayed penalty advantage. The sophomore cashed in on a rebound generated from a shot by
Tiffany Hill to put Dartmouth in front by a trio of goals.
Sullivan came up large with numerous saves in the final stretch of the second period to help Dartmouth maintain a 3-0 lead heading into the third.
The Big Red found a long-awaited goal with 12:48 remaining in regulation. Izzy Daniel found the back of the net to cut Dartmouth's lead to two.
Dartmouth responded immediately, as Bowlby blasted a shot past Mende following a feed inside the slot from Donohue. Bowlby's seventh of the season came just 40 seconds after Cornell's goal, which helped the Big Green regain a three-goal advantage.
"We talk about attitude, effort and response all the time," Keady Norton said. "You can never get too high or too low. For us, to come and answer right back was a big deal. It shows the resilience of this group."
Bowlby put the exclamation point on Dartmouth's victory with an empty-net goal with 4:15 remaining in regulation. Dartmouth cruised to a four-goal win over the Big Red.
"Overall, it was a great team effort in the defensive zone," Sullivan said. "Everything we were doing was for one another. We stayed with them and to beat the No. 10 team in the country like that was a great experience."
Dartmouth improved to 7-16-0 with a 3-13-0 record in ECAC Hockey conference play. Cornell fell to 12-9-2 and 9-6-1 in conference contests. The Big Green picked up their first victory over a ranked opponent since defeating then-No. 9 Cornell at home on October 30, 2021. Dartmouth's win over the No. 10 Big Red also marked the team's first road victory over a ranked foe since February 14, 2015 against then-No. 10 Cornell at Lynah Rink.
The Big Green return home for the first two games of a four-contest stand at Thompson Arena next weekend. Dartmouth takes on Quinnipiac Friday, February 3 before a matchup with Princeton the following day. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet internationally.
