DURHAM, N.H. —
Doreen Ariik achieved game-highs in both points and rebounds on Sunday afternoon as the Big Green edged New Hampshire, 43-40, at Lundholm Gymnasium for their second straight win.
Dartmouth, now with back-to-back wins for the first time since the 2019-20 season, improved to 2-2 on the season, while New Hampshire dropped to 2-5.
"This is the type of game that we needed to learn how to win, and we practiced these situations yesterday," said
Linda Cimino, Dartmouth's Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach, who earned her first Division I win at the Big Green's helm. "I'm really proud of the way we executed. Our bench was tremendous today and the energy was contagious. We want to continue to move the needle forward and we're doing a good job of that right now.
Ariik earned her first double-double of the season, matching her career-high with 13 rebounds and achieving a career-best with 12 points. Dartmouth didn't have a double-double during the 2022-23 season, but already has two to its credit in 2023-24 with the first coming from
Nina Minicozzi against Siena. Minicozzi joined Ariik in double figures against the Wildcats, scoring 10 points thanks in part to a 2-of-3 showing from the perimeter. Adara Gorman led New Hampshire with nine points, while Maggie Cavanaugh grabbed eight rebounds.
Dartmouth, which leads the Ivy League in both scoring defense and opponent field goal percentage, has held three straight opponents under 60 points. New Hampshire shot just over 30 percent and Dartmouth's previous opponent, Keene State, was held under 27 percent.
A 40-40 tie persisted for nearly five minutes in the fourth quarter, but
Victoria Page's drive to the hoop with less than a minute remaining gave the Big Green a lead they wouldn't surrender.
Cate MacDonald sank one of two at the line with 15 seconds remaining to provide a three-point cushion and New Hampshire's Karolina Andersson missed the potential game-tying triple as time expired.
Dartmouth faced a 12-8 deficit at the end of the first quarter, but scored 21 points with the help of a 3-of-4 performance from downtown in the second to carry a 29-24 lead into halftime. Minicozzi knocked down a pair of triples in the second quarter, including one that gave Dartmouth its largest lead of the half (27-18).
Another Minicozzi bucket handed the Big Green their only double-digit lead of the game (35-24) midway through the third quarter. Cavanaugh answered with a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession as the Wildcats began chipping away, eventually trailing by only three entering the final quarter.
Five straight points by New Hampshire's Andersson opened the fourth and handed Dartmouth a 37-35 deficit. Page had the response with a 3-pointer, the first of two crucial buckets down the stretch for the junior. Gorman knocked down New Hampshire's second trey of the quarter at the 5:48 mark, but that was the last of the Wildcats' scoring as they missed each of their last seven attempts from the field.
The Big Green are back in action on Thursday, Nov. 30 as they head to Vermont. The non-conference matchup begins at 6 p.m. and will air live on ESPN+. Fans will then have the chance to see Dartmouth in action at Leede Arena on Monday, Dec. 4 as the Big Green host UC Riverside.
