The Big Green and the Catamounts meet for the first time since last season’s 67-66 nailbiter
By: Kyle Relf
GAME 5
Dartmouth (2-2, 0-0 Ivy League) vs. Vermont (3-4, 0-0 America East) Date and Time: Thursday, Nov. 30 | 6 p.m. Location: Burlington, Vt. | Patrick Gymnasium All-Time Series: 17-22 Last Meeting: Dec. 1, 2022 (L, 67-66)
BACK-TO-BACK WINS
After defeating New Hampshire on the road (and Keene State at home), Dartmouth has won back-to-back games for the first time since the 2019-20 season. The Big Green and the Wildcats were deadlocked at 40-40 for nearly five minutes in the fourth quarter until Victoria Page drove to the hoop for the go-ahead layup with 50 seconds remaining. It was all Dartmouth would need in a 43-40 triumph.
ARIIK SHINES ON SUNDAY Doreen Ariik was key in the win over New Hampshire, recording game-highs in scoring (12) and rebounding (13) for her first double-double of the season and third of her career. 12 points marked a career-high and 13 boards matched a career-high, which was just set in Dartmouth's win over Keene State on Nov. 14. Ariik currently ranks first in the Ivy League and 30th in the nation in blocks per game, and is second in the Ivy League, along with 22nd nationally, in rebounds per game.
LOCKING DOWN
After keeping opponents in the 40s in back-to-back games, Dartmouth leads the Ivy League in both scoring defense and opponent field goal percentage. No one is getting to the line much against the Big Green, who commit fewer fouls than any other team in the country at 8.8 per game. No one else is under 10 fouls per game. 40 points, which is what New Hampshire mustered on Sunday, are the fewest allowed by any Ivy League team this season. Keene State's 41 are tied for the second lowest.
LAST SEASON'S THRILLER
Vermont, the eventual America East champion, needed a last-second 3-pointer from Catherine Gilwee to defeat Dartmouth at Leede Arena on Dec. 1, 2022. If not for Gilwee's triple, the 2022-23 Big Green squad would've had wins over two NCAA Tournament teams (they went on to beat CAA champion Monmouth on the road nine days later). Dartmouth was 11-of-18 from deep against the Catamounts and Victoria Page knocked down five 3-pointers as part of her 23 points, which was a career high at the time. She topped that performance with 25 against Monmouth.
ALL-TIME AGAINST VERMONT
Dartmouth is 17-22 all-time against its twin-state rival. The Big Green had a three-game win streak against the Catamounts from 2017-19, but saw that streak snap during the 2021-22 season and now have back-to-back losses after last season's nail-biter at Leede Arena. Four of the last five meetings have been decided by double digits and the Big Green are 3-2 in that stretch.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES
The Big Green didn't have any double-doubles during the 2022-23 season, but already has two this year thanks to Nina Minicozzi and Doreen Ariik. Dartmouth and Harvard are the only Ivy League teams that have multiple players with double-doubles so far this season.
SCOUTING VERMONT
In their first game since returning home from the Gulf Coast Showcase in Florida, the Catamounts will look to snap a three-match losing streak when hosting the Big Green. Vermont was just a couple possessions away from a signature win over No. 18 North Carolina in a 54-51 loss. The Catamounts returned Emma Utterback for a fifth year and she currently leads the America East in scoring.
LOOKING AHEAD
On Monday, Dec. 4, Dartmouth is back home for the first time Nov. 14 when it hosts UC Riverside at 2 p.m. It's the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and live stats will be available through DartmouthSports.com, along with an audio broadcast.
