CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The 22nd-ranked Miami Hurricanes finished off a three-game series sweep of the visiting Dartmouth Big Green on Sunday, powering their way to a 20-2 victory at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field. A 21-hit attack with three home runs helped Miami (7-1) win its seventh straight game while Dartmouth dropped to 0-3 on the season.
The day began well for the Big Green freshman right-hander
Eddie Albert (0-1) kept the Hurricanes scoreless in the first two innings and another rookie,
Milo Suarez, belted the first pitch of the third over the fence in left field for his first collegiate home run in just his second career at-bat. The newcomers kept coming as Nico Bañez followed by lining a one-hopper off the fence down the right-field line, then came around to score on a pair of infield outs to give the Green a 2-0 lead.
The rest of the day, however, certainly did not go Dartmouth's way. The Hurricanes began the bottom half of the third with a walk and a pair of singles to load the bases with nobody out, and although Yohandy Morales fell behind in the count 0-2, he grounded the next pitch through the hole between short and third for a two-run single, tying the game. Zach Levenson also smacked an 0-2 pitch, sending an RBI single off the fence in right-center, and Blake Cyr lined brought home a fourth run with a solid single to left, ending Albert's afternoon. Sophomore southpaw
Danny Will replaced him on the mound and did admirable work, keeping the deficit at 4-2 by striking out the side.
Miami was back at it in the fifth, again by loading the bases with nobody out, this time on a single sandwiched between two hit batters. Freshman reliever
Mac Burke got the first out on a force at home, but a balk brought home one run, a sacrifice fly another and an RBI double by Dario Gomez to make it a 7-2 game.
Two home runs came in the sixth in back-to-back fashion — a three-run, opposite-field shot to left by Dorian Gonzalez Jr. followed by a drive over the fence in right by Dominic Pitelli — as Miami boosted its lead to 12-2. In the eighth, Jason Torres capped an eight-run outburst with a three-run shot of his own, the first of his career.
Lost in all the offense was the six-inning start by Hurricane right-hander Alejandro Rosario (2-0), who settled in after surrendering the two Dartmouth runs in the second. Only two batters reached base against him following Bañez's double in the second (on a walk and an error) as he finished his outing giving up three hits and the one walk while striking out seven.
Dartmouth returns to the diamond next weekend for four games at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, North Carolina. First up will be Wagner on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m.
