ORLANDO, Fla. — Dartmouth senior
Jack Metzger threw seven strong innings and departed with a six-run lead, but UCF (14-5) rallied for nine runs in the eighth, capped by Andrew Brait's grand slam, to defeat the visiting Big Green (1-10) at John Euliano Park on Saturday afternoon, 12-10.
Dartmouth banged out a season-high 15 hits, including three solo homers courtesy of freshman
Ivan Hoyt, senior
Connor Bertsch and sophomore
Luke Carroll. Senior
Kolton Freeman had a career-high four hits as well, going 4-for-4 with a double, walk, two runs and an RBI.
Metzger provided the Big Green's best start of the young season, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk over his career-long seven stanzas. The right-hander racked up 93 pitches (also a career high), 72 for strikes, as he struck out seven Knights, a personal best. He finished his outing with a flourish as well, retiring 10 of the final 11 batters he faced, striking out the last two in the seventh.
But the potent UCF offense could not be subdued by the Big Green bullpen as the first eight hitters reached base, though the first one was picked off for the first out. The third reliever of the inning, junior
Devin Milberg, entered with the bases loaded and one down with Dartmouth clinging to a 9-7 lead. After inducing a foul pop for the second out, he issued a walk to force in a run. Brait then turned on a first-pitch fastball and sent it over the fence in left for the go-ahead grand slam.
The Big Green were not done, however, as Carroll cranked his first career four-bagger with one gone in the ninth. And when junior
Tyler Cox lined a two-out single, Dartmouth had the tying run come to the plate in the form of Hoyt, who had homered back in the third inning. But Knight closer Kyle Kramer was up to the challenge and got Hoyt to freeze on a third strike to record his fourth save of the year.
It was Freeman that gave Dartmouth a 1-0 lead in the top of the first by singling home sophomore
Elliot Krewson, who had looped a base hit to center with two out and taken second on a wild pitch.
Hoyt doubled that lead in the third with his long home run to center, the rookie's first collegiate long ball. And although UCF got that run back in the bottom half on a John Rhys Plumlee RBI single, Bertsch led off the top of the fourth with his first round-tripper of the year. The Big Green worked some more two-out magic in the inning when freshman Nico Bañez was hit by a pitch, stole second and scampered home on junior
Tyler Cox's single through the right side just ahead of the throw to the plate for a 4-1 lead.
UCF got those two runs back in its half on a two-run blast off the bat of Andrew Sundean, but again the Green responded quickly. Freeman and senior
James House ripped back-to-back doubles for one run, and a pair of errors allowed House to score to regain the three-run advantage at 6-3.
Freshman
Milo Suarez laced a two-run single to center in the seventh as Dartmouth took advantage of another UCF miscue that started the inning, and in the eighth, three walks and a two-out passed ball allowed Cox to scurry home for a 9-3 lead.
Earning the win for the Knights was reliever Cameron Crain (1-0), who got the final two outs in the eighth on strikeouts after walking his first hitter.
Mac Burke (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs without recording an out.
The first pitch of the final contest of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with live stats available through StatBroadcast as well as the official site of Dartmouth Athletics, DartmouthSports.com.
Notes: UCF now leads the all-time series, 5-3 … Freeman has an eight-game hitting streak during which he is 12-for-25 (.480) … the three home runs for the Big Green are their most since belting four just over a year ago at Gardner-Webb on March 6.
