JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville broke open a one-run game with six runs in the seventh and eighth innings to hand visiting Dartmouth an 8-2 loss on Tuesday night at John Sessions Stadium. Kris Armstrong drove in four runs to lead the Dolphins (14-8), and the Big Green (1-12) left 16 men on base as they suffered their fifth straight defeat.
Jacksonville rapped out 13 hits against six Dartmouth pitchers, three by Blake Delamielleure, while Armstrong provided a two-run double in both the seventh and eighth frames to blow open the contest.
Dartmouth trailed by seven runs in the ninth but not would not go quietly into the night.
Elliot Krewson, who reached base in all five of his plate appearances, led off by getting hit by a pitch,
Connor Bertsch walked and
Ryan Schwartz dropped a single into center in his first plate appearance of the season to load the bases. The first out came on
Max Zajec's sacrifice fly to left, plating Krewson, and another trotted home when
Jackson Hower and
Zackarie Casebonne drew consecutive walks, forcing Bertsch plateward to make it an 8-3 game with the tying run on deck.
That's when Jacksonville summoned closer Chris Lotito from the bullpen, and he subdued the Big Green by inducing a pop fly to third and a routine fly to right to earn his fifth save of the season.
Dakota Stone (2-1) picked up the win by being effectively wild, allowing just one hit without a run over five frames while walking six and fanning a career-high 10.
Jacksonville broke a scoreless tie in the third against Dartmouth starter
Luke Carpenter (0-1) on RBI singles by Elias Flowers and Justin Nadeau to take a 2-0 lead.
The score remained 2-0 through six stanzas, but the Big Green finally dented the scoreboard against reliever Divine Valle in the seventh. Krewson ripped a one-out double into the left-center gap, took third when the ball was bobbled on the warning track and raced home on a grounder to short off the bat of Bertsch, cutting the deficit in half.
The Dolphins promptly loaded the bases in the bottom half without getting the ball out of the infield on a throwing error and a pair of bunt singles. Nadeau then ripped a 3-1 pitch into right for an RBI single, and Armstrong followed with his two-run two-bagger to right, making it a 5-1 ball game. Jacksonville threatened to keep the rally going, but reliever
Devin Milberg came on and got the final two outs of the inning on strikes with the bases loaded.
After Dartmouth put runners on the corners with two outs in the eighth but failed to score, it looked like the Dolphins would go quietly in the eighth after the first two batters struck out. But Chase Malloy smacked a double, Nadeau walked and Armstrong hit his second two-run double. Hogan McIntosh produced the third double of the inning to score Armstrong, putting JU up by seven, 8-1, and giving the Dolphins plenty of room for error in the ninth.
Despite collecting just six hits, the Big Green had their chances all night with 10 walks and two hit batters. Krewson was 2-for-2 with a double, two walks and a hit by pitch while
Tyler Cox reached base three times on a single and a pair of base on balls.
Dartmouth will complete its spring-break trip tomorrow night against Jacksonville with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. Fans can follow along by watching or listening to the broadcast through JUDolphins.com, the Jacksonville athletics website, and live stats will be available as well.
Notes: This was the first meeting between the two teams on the diamond … the 16 men left on base were the most for Dartmouth in a nine-inning game since leaving 17 on in a 17-8 victory over Yale on April 19, 2009 … the school record for any game is 27 in the 21-inning marathon against Penn in 2019 … the three runs are the fewest for the Big Green in a game in which they walked at least 10 times since scoring two against Harvard in 1989.
